Opinions on selenium, imacros, etc tests

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi all--

We need interactive tests for Rave's web interface. Does anyone have
opinions on Selenium, iMacros, JMeter, etc?

Thanks--

It can also be used for integration testing. We did that @ SURFnet (Okke was
a big fan of JMeter as integration test tool).

Selenium rocks (and provides a really lightweight way to get started
through the Selenium IDE. iMacros is somewhat limited in my
experience.

JMeter fits a different need to Selenium. It's about load testing.

I'd say start with Selenium and bring JMeter in at a sensible time.

Note, there is additional benefits of using Selenium IDE scripts
instead of coded tests (such scripts can be used to generate standard
unit tests).

a) it's really simple for non-technical people to build useful scripts

b) set it to playback a bunch of scripts and run a screen recorder at
the same time and you have auto-updating screencasts of major pieces
of functionality.

c) require a Selenium script to demonstrate each new UI feature and
you can create a screencast (or set of stills) for that new feature
(handy for release notes).
