The latest Cocoon CVS HEAD has the XML:DB pseudo-protocol compiled in by
default. This means that it's possible to query directly any XML:DB
compliant database using plain URLs (such as
xmldb:dbxml://localhost/my/collection#//my/xpath[@query]). There are
also a couple of generators, but I'd suggest not to use them since most
probably they will be deprecated and dropped in favor of the new pseudo
protocols.

Cocoon has an XML:DB Connector that you can use to talk to Xindice. I
don't believe it's built by default, and it may not be available in the
most recent stable release, but you can access it via the Cocoon CVS
repository.
