I and many others use mod_jk successfully.
But first read the doc from tomcat.
I prefer the this doc for using apache and tomcat together

and look in the mailing archive.

(I have not tried this myself ) I would definitely spend more time looking
for the binaries (like one of our other friends on the list suggested)
before trying to build mod_jk.
