+1 (binding)

FYI, now, I'm working on the documentation update and preparation of the

By the way for json it's used in the WebConsole.

For the system folder, I will take a look.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Karaf 4.0.0

Posted by Christian Schneider <ch...@die-schneider.net>.
Currently looking into the release.

I found something strange. In the
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachekaraf-1033/org/apache/karaf/apache-karaf/4.0.0/apache-karaf-4.0.0.tar.gz
there is a strange directory tree with the framework xml.

apache-karaf-4.0.0/system/file:/x1/asf/karaf/k40x/target/checkout/assemblies/apache-karaf/target/assembly/system/org/apache/karaf/features/framework/4.0.0/framework-4.0.0-features.xml

It is nothing that would hold off the release but we should remove it
for upcoming builds.

One other thing is the RELEASE-NOTES. It seems to contain changes since
the beginning of karaf. In the end it seems to break mid line at some
servicemix issue.
I am also not sure it contains all karaf 4 issues as for example the
section for M1 does not seem to contain any issues.
Not sure if this is technically a problem for the release. For me
personally it is not a big issue.

The NOTICE file contains these lines at the end:
This product includes software from http://www.json.org.
Copyright (c) 2002 JSON.org

It does not state what license we use. I was also not able to find any
library named like json. I know we support json files for the
JsonRepository though. Is this something we need to clarify?

For the karaf maven plugin. How did you configure your other repositories?
I think you can configure them in the call to the plugin and in your
maven settings.xml.
In case of the settings.xml you have to make sure it is in the default
place. ~/.m2/settings.xml

Hi JB,
Yes, I do have the dependency. The packaging worked correctly with 3.0.3
and only broke when upgrading 4.0.0.M3. I noticed that my dependancy on

not. After changing the scope to "compile", I now get this error instead:

Hi Marc,

It's not really vote related, but not a big deal ;)

For your issue, you can have an example in the Karaf assembly itself:

https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=karaf.git;a=blob_plain;f=assemblies/apache-karaf/pom.xml;hb=HEAD

Basically, can you check if your pom.xml contains the <dependency/> with
Karaf standard features XML ?

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Karaf 4.0.0

Posted by Fabian Lange <fa...@codecentric.de>.
Hi,
I have upgraded out stack to 4.0.0 and observed the following:

I observed that the karaf-maven-plugin was unable to build my dist because
it only checked the maven central remote. I needed to manually clone the
required jars to my local repo.
I reported this to irc.

The assembly plugin indeed does copy a strange artifact as Christian
reported:
/Users/fabian/work/source/karaf-assembly/system/file:/Users/fabian/work/source/karaf-assembly/target/assembly/system/org/apache/karaf/features/framework/4.0.0/framework-4.0.0-features.xml

I would like to have both at least checked and understood before the
release, but my vote is non binding anyways.

Best regards,
Fabian

+1 (non-binding)

I had problems with cxf and camel-cxf like described by Christian but it's not directly connected to Karaf release. For ServiceMix it would be nice to have it working
somewhere after summer holidays.

Good job!!

Great news on new jpa datasource recognition. Want to try it.

Looking forward for jndi+cxf (or atmosphere) test results.

I have not tested jndi recently.

If you test jpa in karaf 4 you have to be aware that we upgraded to
aries jpa 2.0.0. So if you simply do feature:install jpa you will get
the aries jpa 2.0.0 bundles.
These behave a bit different so they might break you old code. Btw.
aries jpa 2.0.0 will not use jndi for datasources. It still supports the
same syntax but will directly use a ServiceTracker to find the DataSource.

If you want to use the old aries jpa you have to install jpa/1.0.4.

Will do some jndi tests to check if there are problems.

- Installed cxf 3.1.1

Christian, did you test cxf 3.1.1 and jndi (for example jpa persistence unit
datasource request)?
CXF 3.1.1 and Atmosphere framework crashes JNDI somehow in Karaf 3.0.3.
I think it may be also problem in Karaf 4.
There is some sort of InitialContextFactory replacement.

+1 (non binding)

I now also did some functional tests:

- Installed the aries jpa DS example (Aries jpa 2.0.0, Hibernate 4.3.6,
pax-jdbc 0.6.0) and tested
- Installed activemq 5.12-SNAPSHOT and tested Activemq webconsole
- Installed webconsole and tested
- Installed cxf 3.1.1
- Installed camel 2.15.2 camel-http camel-servlet

All above tests worked fine.

- Installed camel 2.15.2 camel-cxf
This did not work as camel still refers to old cxf 3.0.4 which does not
work for Karaf 4. I am not sure if there is a workaround but this may
pose some problems for camel users.

There are some problems with current Activemq versions. Most of the
problems are fixed in the branches already. So we should push for
Activemq releases soon so people can use it on karaf 4.

The above problems are not directly related to the karaf 4.0.0 release
though.

Christian
