There's a good reason for this: Jelly's support for ant variables currently only allows them to be retrieved from the context, no further evaluation is done.
This is all in org.apache.commons.jelly.expression.jexl.JexlExpressionFactory.
This will either require changes to JEXL, or implementation of expressio n parsing for dotted variables in Jelly.
For me, this isn't a blocker for beta4.
