Retiring AdvocateHub
Hey folks,
Sorry for not being around much. I've been struggling with burnout and
I haven't been able to contribute to CouchDB since April.
Unfortunately that means our AdvocateHub program hasn't had anybody
running it, and it's been in steady decline since I left.
Here's a graph of monthly challenge completions:
https://i.imgur.com/yd3IvaS.png
This is a shame. I think AdvocateHub is a great product. And I firmly
believe that an advocate marketing programme could be hugely
beneficial for CouchDB. But it needs someone with the time (and the
spoons) to run it. For the time being, that isn't me.
If someone is prepared to go through the AdvocateHub training
programme, and commit some minimum amount of hours to it on a weekly
basis (four or more is probably advisable) I would be more than happy
to connect you with our account manager at Influitive. I could also
share my private notes and ideas with you.
Otherwise, I propose we retire it.
Thanks,

Re: Retiring AdvocateHub

Hey Noah,
first of all thanks so much, that you started the AdvocateHub for CouchDB.
I participated in the beginning and have to say, that it's not very hard
to spend some time. The tasks are easy and doable. And it's fun too!
I feel sorry, that I stopped participating. Unfortunately, this also counts
for many other aspects in the CouchDB community from my side. But we have
to stay realistic. It's an OpenSource project and everybody is welcome to
contribute. And if time changes for what ever reason, it can be, that
people do not have the same amount of time left to participate. So form
this perspective, please don't feel sorry at all, that you cannot run it
further. Health is more important than everything else.
That said, I would love to see that your efforts have not been for the
trash bin. So if you, Harald, are able to run this further, this would be
super awesome. I personally do not have the slot for participating or
taking it over. At the moment. I have no idea what is in half a year.
So tl;dr; - it would be sad if it dies. And it would be a luck if someone
is taking over (Harald ;-)?).
All the best
Andy

We’ve recently did some specific outreach for an editorial team at Hoodie,
maybe something like this can work for CouchDB and running the Hub, too?

Thanks Noah for getting it started, and Harald for driving this further!
CouchDB does need a social media presence, and AdvocateHub is a great
gamification strategy to drive that further.

Re: Retiring AdvocateHub

Hi Noah,
can you give me a list of tasks which are necessary for contribution?
I am also interested in the up-front investment tasks to get trained up.
It feels like feeding a dying horse but if you have medicine, we could get
it up and running.
For me the horse looks strong enough and if the the contribution takes 1 to
2 hours a week in the running phase, I can contribute much longer than 6
months.

Re: Retiring AdvocateHub

thanks Klaus <3
Harald: for this to make sense you'd probably have to commit about 4 hours
per week for a significant period of time (say 6 months at a minimum). it
would also require an up-front investment of time to get yourself trained
up on the hub
I realise that's a lot! is it something you're still interested in?

Re: Retiring AdvocateHub

Hi Noah,
i do not like to see such work getting retired.
With 1 or 2 hours a week I would take care about it. Can you tell me which
actions are necessary to prevent the Advocate Hub from getting retired?

No opinion here on this particular issue.
However, I'd like to express my deep gratitude for what you've done for us.
Starting with CouchDB's previous build system, you've cared more and
more about issues that are critical to building a great community, which
are the actual important ones. You've put in a a lot of work that
requires a lot of energy, and can sometimes be draining.
Thank you so much, Noah!
To all:
I know it's easier said than done, but let's not feel bad about not
contributing (any)more! It kills the fun that we are supposed to have,
and prevents us from enjoying what we came here for in the first place.
Take care everybody!
Best,
Klaus

Noah,
Retire this thing with a good feeling of accomplishment, it has surved a good purpose.
You made us aware of the need for a community to build content on Quora and Stockoverflow and keep doing stuff in SoMe.
The only thing that heals a burnout is to practice what we preach; Relax
