Older Tomcat 4.0.x specific test case failures

Odi
I installed Tomcat 4.0.1 and managed to reproduce the problem. I do get
an error and a failure which do not occur when the test cases are
preformed against Tomcat 4.1.18:

- testHeadAuth (error)
- testGetResponseNotReadAutoRecover (failure)

At least we may find small comfort in getting consistent results ;-)

Excellent!

I'm happy that you could reproduce this. And I am happy as well that you
are still in the office as well :-)

Okay. It's okay if a test case does not work with an old Tomcat version
as long as HttpClient works fine in regular use with the old Tomcat.

Since I'm the one who added at least one of the tests, I think I should
speak up.

I have observed problems with the older "Connectors" in the Tomcat
architecture. I've not looked at this case in particular, but it may
be, for example, that the client requests a "Connection: close", but
then the server doesn't close the connection, or the converse, and
HttpClient gets confused. I know I tested 4.1.12 with the HttpConnector
(rather than the latest and greatest CoyoteConnector), and observed that
Tomcat would close the connection after all "GET" and "HEAD" requests
that didn't include the redundant "Content-Length: 0" header. This lead
to cases where Tomcat would close the connection, but HttpClient didn't
expect the connection to be closed, and HttpClient would throw a
"recoverable" exception. To catch these scenarios, I put in the counter
for "recoverable" exceptions, to make sure that we are handling cases
where the connection is closed in a cleaner way. I also updated a few
tests to check the "recoverable" exception count, to insure that
HttpClient was not surprised by the content of the response from the server.

It is possible that Tomcat 4.0.1 really bollixed things up, and this is
in fact an intractable problem, and we have to live with the two test
failures. I hope not.

I don't think I'll have time to look at this problem today, but might
have time tomorrow. In the meantime, if you are looking at the problem,
I hope the above gives some insight into what might be going on.
