question about catalina window and log files for an application

Hi,

I'm using SSH Secure Shell to remote login the server, where tomcat is at. I
run tomcat from the SSH from my local machine, however the catalina window
doesnt' show up. May I know if I should change some configuration to let it
show up?

And I also want to know how to create log files under log directory for an
application.

Any help would be appreciated.
