Using the Object Data Store in TurbineGroup
Hello.
How do I get access to the Object Data Store in the TurbineGroup object? I
take it that I can use set/getPerm() in TurbineUser, but is there an
analogous method for Groups? If not, how do I extend TurbineGroup short of
recompiling Turbine altogether?
Or does somebody have another solution?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
I originally followed this method for TURBINE_USER until I finally worked
through all of the issues and contributed a significant rewrite to the
extend-user-howto. It sort of worked, but I got sick of doing double hits
on the database to get from TURBINE_USER to my own user table implantation.
In this case I was actually suggestion a completely separate table but the
result is basically the same.
Why aren't pluggable groups supported? The problem is that everyone has
different requirements when it comes to security. There has been a few
waves of discussion about replacing the security implementation over on
turbine-dev. If I recall correctly the way forward will involve defining
some fairly empty interfaces for the security so that people can then
implement their own specific requirements. The idea being that a bunch of
different implementations might be made available over time as people
determine their needs, implement solutions and contribute their code. I'm
not sure if this is stalled or in progress - would probably be a t3
development in any case.
Cheers,
Scott

Scott-
I ended up doing something pretty similar to your first suggestion. To get
extra information into the Group, I:
*added columns to the TURBINE_GROUP table
*made a schema called EXTENDED_GROUP that contained the entire table
information
*ran "ant project-om" to get my ExtendedGroupPeers (etc.)
*Edited ExtendedGroupMapBuilder to return "TURBINE_GROUP" as the table name
Now the Turbine Security works fine, I can get my extended info using the
class ExtendedGroup, and I don't have to manage records in two tables. I
will let the list know if I run into future problems with this.
Out of curiosity, why have the developers not extended the security system
to allow for pluggable groups *and* users?
Thanks for your help!
Chris

There is no way to access the OBJECTDATA fields in the TURBINE_* tables
other than TURBINE_USER. These columns have already been removed from the
fulcrum security service.
You have a couple of options:
1. Implement a table that has a one-to-one mandatory relationship with
TurbineGroup and store any group related data there.
2. Roll your own security service that caters for your needs.
