another FluxTool.java question

I've been playing with Velocity and the FluxTool.

Question: Why does $flux.User (or $flux.getUser()) only return the valid 
'turbine' user that I logged in with when I do the LoginUser action? 
 When I go to other pages, I get a user with a null userID.

I'm attempting to change the links displayed in the menu depending upon 
whether the user is logged in or not.
