but there is still the {{bigtop.mk}} which is awkardly parsed in the Bigtop groovy utils class. Should that be a part of this JIRA ? (BIGTOP-1494) ?  

*or* would you rather separate into two separate tasks >?

+1 to commit if you feel we should tackle the bigtop.mk cleanup in  a later task.
