About simple validating

Hi! 
I have one question about validation. I know that DTD are not used anymore
but I still want to be clear about something. Is it right that validation
against a DTD is possible only using SAX2, if so why does SAX1 make it
possible to read a DTD?? Please someone take time to sort this out for me.
Because I want to use SAX1 if its possible to validate with it.
