Tapestry and hibernate vs cayenne
Hi all,
I would like to know who is using one of this O/R frameworks within
tapestry.
I've read a january post of the cayenne ml where mr. Ship (i think) told
we was writing a book about tapestry and had to choose between the two.
Howard: have you implemented the petstore? What O/R tool did you
used/you plan to use?
Hibernate seem to have a bigger userbase and I've found very good
comments about it. I don't know anything about cayenne.
Thank you,

Shawn,
Hibernate works with the following:
Oracle, DB2, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase, SAP DB, HypersonicSQL, Microsoft
SQL Server, Informix, FrontBase, Ingres, Progress, Mckoi SQL, Pointbase
and Interbase.
I'll let you know when I'm done.

I've used Castor JDO a little bit, but ran into problems. Unfortunately, this
is a little time ago now, but I do recall that it had limitations in the
types of joins supported. Personally, I would now favor either Cayenne or
Hibernate (I've used Cayenne on a small site sucessfully).
I've not used Hibernate yet, but given the positive feedback about it I've
read here, I would jump at the chance.

Jan,
Will Hibernate work with the McKoi database?
Either way, I would be very interested in seeing the Hibernate
implementation.

Luis Neves has done a fine work at implementing the Petshop with
Tapestry 3.0.
Here is what he recently wrote in another thread:

I am actually just about to replace the persistence part of it with
Hibernate. I could send you a copy once I'm done. I expect it to take
about a week. I have used Hibernate on a couple of projects and it has
been a good experience. The documentation is very good and complete.
I write an xml file defining tables, relations and queries. From that I
use ant to generate domain model java classes and a ddl file for
creating the database. I then write "business logic" classes which
contain all database operations related to each domain model class.
I don't know Cayenne.

I agree. Thankfully, no hand editing XML model files, the cayenne modeler
takes care of that for you.
> I've settled on SimpleORM because it's very simple, very thin.
With Cayenne you can be thick or thin depending on the circumstance (Sorry
for the cayenne code on the tapestry list):
Thick approach:
// fetch user with id "123"
Expression qualifier = ExpressionFactory.matchExp("userId", new
Integer(123));
SelectQuery query = new SelectQuery(User.class, qualifier);
List list = getDataContext().performQuery(query);
Thin approach:
String sql = "SELECT user_id, username, email, .... ";
sql += "FROM user ";
sql += "WHERE user_id = " + 123;
SqlSelectQuery query = new SqlSelectQuery(User.class, sql);
List list = getDataContext().performQuery(query);
I prefer the thick approach, which really isn't thick at all.

Hi Stefano,
I recently embarked on development of a new web app. I have been
looking into O/R mapping tools for this new app. I've settled on
SimpleORM because it's very simple, very thin. I don't think it has a
wide user base, but it's not very complicated, so you can fix it
yourself. It doesn't implement OQL or JDO, which I don't care to use
anyway. JDO is too new. SQL is much more robust as a query language
than OQL, so you have to bypass OQL for your more complicated reports
anyway.
I also like the fact that I don't have to write any mappings in XML.
Editing XML is so error prone.

Choice, it's a double edge sword, isn't it.
Good Luck,
Tina

Re: Tapestry and hibernate vs cayenne

Stefano,
One vote for Cayenne.
In all seriousness, using either framework is a step in the right direction.
You can probably learn the Cayenne API in less time than it would take you
to write and test PreparedStatements for ONE entity with some custom DAO
pattern.
The community is small, but extremely helpful. The Cayenne list is very
similar to this one. Post are answered promptly (most frequently by the
creator of cayenne).
Quick list of why it rocks:
- It has a handful of DB vendor adaptors
- A modeling tool that can reverse engineer a DB schema.
- The ability to generate a DB schema from the modeler.
- No sql writing.
- No connection mgmt.
Most importantly, the framework is rock solid. I know this from personal
experience. The client I'm working with now uses Tapestry and Cayenne.
Their site is absolutely crushed with traffic. Couldn't be happier with the
performance of both frameworks.
O/R frameworks = good stuff.
Cheers,
Eric

I ended up using the spiffed-up Virtual Library (which uses JDBC and CMP EJB) instead. I didn't
have the time to learn one or two other frameworks.
I've seen a lot of Hibernate and Cayenne usage. I don't know enough about them to choose.

Re: [tapestry] Tapestry and hibernate vs cayenne
Posted by J <we...@fluidic.com>.
I am using Hibernate now on a new project. This is my first OR
framework/service to use, so I have a little learning curve with it.
So far it works well. Tapestry has no idea how the objects are "created",
since I have UseCase objects implementing all the business logic. In these
usecase classes, all the hibernate calls are being done. Example, I have a
CustomerNewUseCase class that requires a Customer object that should be
inserted into the database.
I might change this and try to abstract out the database handling in the
usecases. If I ever have to change my database framework, I would be
screwed. But I dont envision doing that since Hibernate can be used across
the three db platforms I use.

RE: Tapestry and hibernate vs cayenne

I've used both frameworks. Cayenne and Hibernate are outstanding
products. Cayenne is lightly based on EOF.
Hibernate has more tools support, e.g. xdoclet, middlegen and andromda.
I prefer, in productivity terms, xdoclet and ant instead of tools like
Cayenne Modeler, but this is a controversial opinion.
Cayenne is easier to learn than Hibernate - I had a good WebObjects
background.
Choose Hibernate if you need Session beans integration and/or optimistic
locking.
Other difference could be database support.
And last but not least: license. Hibernate is LPGL. Cayenne is Apache
like.
