Logwriter Process

I have noticed that when Storm is run, two processes are created. I know that one is the worker process and the other is the LogWriter process. However, I don't know much about the LogWriter process. What benefit is provided by running this process to help with logging? Is there an option to disable the creation of this process so that only one process is started?
