I am new to Struts

Hi,

I am new to struts, so I don't know clearly about it. Can anybody explain to
me the roles of struts in an web application?
I saw some versions of struts available at struts home page (e.g. binary,
source or something like that). Could you give me the differences between
these versions?
By the way, can I build my own application without Struts? (but still using
model 2, of course)
