FTPServer one more time

Hi, general.

Some time ago I asked about situation when none of commiters of project
active anymore. The situation in FTPServer project is much funny, and
tragically in same time.

1st of December I asked this mail list what to do with such projects.
2nd of December I asked ftpserver-dev about who has time and wish to
continue work on project
3rd of December Nicklas Gustasson agree to move on sf.net (and no one
anymore)

7th of December Paul Hammant wrote me and Nicklas private letter:
"You've both been voted in to FtpServer as committers by the PMC <...> I'll
email the infrastructure people."
But there is no answer from Paul until today. BTW, it is second time when I
asked by Paul for my nicknames.

Is there possibility to:
a) contact with Paul?
b) contact with infrastructure people to obtain progress information?

RE: FTPServer one more time

Rana,

We DID vote in two committers, Sergey and Niclas, back in October, but
that's where the process fell through. And why we need to have more than
one person acting as a Mentor for each project.

I can take care of Niclas immediately, since he's already an ASF Committer.
I just checked the CLA records as of today, and we do not have a CLA from
Sergey Vladimirov. As soon as we do, we can put in an account request for
him.

If there are any questions, please let me know. I very much want to see
FTPServer continue its revival. And there appears to be interest in the
MINA camp in seeing that, too.

Re: FTPServer one more time

Hi,

I think it is now my time to break the silence. It
is true that the FTPServer immediately needs proper
mentoring. At this point there are only two commiters
(myself and Paul). Few months ago I tried to add few
other commiters. But due to lack of mentoring effort,
it failed. As there are only two commiters, we cannot
vote to add other commiters. So my hands are tied.

The project is in Incubator for the last 2/3 years.
But without new commiters, it is not going anywhere.
Whenever I have time, I tried to do something. I think
we should move to some other place where the project
will be more dynamic. The situation is very
frustrating for me as well as for other contributors.

Thanks,
Rana Bhattacharyya

I think, as non-commiter I did more than I should. And if this mail list is
not the place to solve such questions, and apache site not provide
instructions, what to do in such situations (without words "probably" and
"suggest"), then what ASF can give for ftpserver community? "Apache"
trademark?

For example, in sf.net, one can send email to site admins and take ownership
over dead project. Where should I send email here?

I consider this mail list as last hope for ftpproject on ASF.

It ain't. There's just some work involved...

I'm sorry, but that's just not so likely to fly. I think you're going to need
to try and "drive" the necessary changes yourself. The first step is probably
getting a mentor to help out (I suggest nagging Rich Bowen or Yoav Shapira
privately, apparently they have some cycles for this).

*If* the FTPServer community decides to move elsewhere, it should stop using
all ASF infrastructure resources completely.

I think it is possible to follow "apache way", but only if it is not dead
end.

Ok, then how is it:
If until new year day we have no response from infrastructure peolple or
other commiters, project is moved to sf.

Project continues to using apache mail list.
Project starts to use sf bugtrack, cvs, page, filesstore, becose we haven't
access to apache ones.

Yep. No account requests recorded. IIRC there was a vote on pmc@incubator.

I disagree that the "incubator PMC" should "intervene". Limit the role of the PMC
as much as possible.

I agree that FTPServer needs
more/more active mentoring if it is too succeed here. If the people interested in
the codebase are not so interested in doing things the "apache way" and want to
take it elsewhere, that is fine too. Anyone out there can ask for dumps of eg
mail archives, source repository, etc (though I'll note using svk you can get
the 'dump' of svn without us knowing, and mboxes of email archives are at eg
  http://incubator.apache.org/mail/
).

Having sort-of followed the development of ftpserver over the last few years
(from its beginnings within avalon a looong time ago) I think I'll actually
recommend taking the codebase and its community elsewhere -- interest in forming
an "ASF-style community" doesn't seem to be building up a whole lot. At some point
its fine to stop trying and just do things "with less overhead".

cheers,

LSD

Yes, I know this.

The problem is roughly like this;

 1. Mentor is AWOL.
 2. PPMC is defunct.
 3. Committers are not really present.
 4. Active/interested parties are not ASF committers.
 5. Paul apparently tried to make you guys committers, but without following
proper procedure and "kicking the can" at infrastructure@, this have
    possibly falling through the cracks.
 6. The Incubator PMC *should* intervene, and *either* terminate the
incubation, *or* revive it by admitting you and Niklas to work on it with
a new and more active mentor. The latter is somewhat irregular for ASF,
but personally I think this is an irregular situation.

Hi, Niklas,

No, the project was not retired. It was "suspended" due to none of commiters
were available.

We would like to stay as Apache Incubator Project for some time (and move
from Incubator), but we have problems which cann't be solved by ourselfs -
we haven't access to svn, for site, etc.

I would suggest that the question is made much more blunt to the Incubator
PMC;

Has FTPserver been retired from Incubation??
If so, can the Incubator PMC in that case help and mark the project as such
and hopefully provide a URL to its new home outside of ASF??
