Alternative response

Hi,

Is there any way to submit a form and generate an alternative response.
For example, I submit a form with search criteria.  In the listener
method I use the search criteria to generate a pdf, set the content type
of the response to "application/pdf", and write it out as the response.

The reason I want to do this in the page is that I want to
maintain my access security (authentication base page), and 
make use of the rewound state of the page.
