list-blocks

Hi,

The attached small file shows some poor behaviour in fop which is not
listed in the limitations web page.

The simple numbered list comes out looking like:

1.

      Block of text

2.
      Another block of text

where I would expect the list-item-label and the list-item-body to be
aligned at their top (bad terminology - I know) to look like:

1.     Block of text

2.     Another block of text

If the list-item-label is large the text of the label and the body occupy
the same space

It would really be useful to list these limitiations on the web page to
save users hitting the same problems

Steve

Sorry, I see I was being a little stupid here

I have tried specifying

<fo:list-block provisional-distance-between-starts="50mm"> and this avoids
the overlap of the list-item-label and the list-item-body. But how is the
style sheet supposed to guess what to set it to?

Also, having set provisional-distance-between-starts="50mm" I tried a big
label and found that the label overlapped the label below. It seems that
the vertical spacing is determined just by the body and not by the label.

In this case of overlap I did not get any >>> from fop.

I rather think this is a problem with your file. You defined a "space-before" with the
whole list item (which is ok) and then with the item body (which results in the behaviour
you don't like) Here is the markup of one list item. I left out all properties which are not
supported anyway (space-before.minimum, space-before.maximum)

<fo:list-item id="N2602" space-before.optimum="1em">
<fo:list-item-label><fo:block>1.</fo:block></fo:list-item-label>
<fo:list-item-body>
<fo:block space-before.optimum="1em">
Anyone can ask for evaluation of a software comparison.
</fo:block>
</fo:list-item-body>
</fo:list-item>

That's true, but you get a lot of >>>>> from fop processing your page. This means an
area overflow in that page.
