Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: MAVEN-1406
Summary: maven shell script doesn't work under cygwin
       Type: Bug

     Status: Closed
   Priority: Minor
 Resolution: FIXED

 Original Estimate: Unknown
 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: maven
 Components:
             cli
   Fix Fors:
             1.0.1
   Versions:
             1.0

   Assignee:
   Reporter: Mark Hobson

    Created: Mon, 26 Jul 2004 8:10 AM
    Updated: Sat, 23 Oct 2004 2:05 AM
Environment: Windows XP, cygwin

Description:
When running maven under cygwin without MAVEN_HOME set, the following shell script errors occur:

dirname: too many arguments
Try `dirname --help' for more information.
cd: can't cd to /cygdrive/c/Documents

This is simply fixed as follows:

maven:
64c64
< cd `dirname $PRG`
---
> cd "`dirname "$PRG"`"
81c81
< cd $saveddir
---
> cd "$saveddir"

I haven't been able to test this under linux, but it should work.
