Can someone help

I'm created some webservices.  Part 1 is to take user credentials and check 
them with a backend db table.  If OK, i retrun a string

I want to put the string returned by the server-side to be stoed in a soap 
header to be used by the client for further communications as proof of 
atheentication

Can someone show me how to write custom soap headers and a request / 
response handler.

I want to put the string value into a soap header, i then want to be able to 
get the value for the sap header

Any help greatly appreciated - I'm very new to this and very stuck
