the cited thread was about extra spaces that were taken into account, witch was unexpected;
the current issue was related to FOP design, IIRC regarding area reservation for page-number-citation, witch content (i.e. the page number) is computed later after the area construction.
The rendering is better with latest releases, but issue still persists in trunk post FOP 1.1.
