I disagree. It is going to be a very long time before we see 2.0. This
type of functionality is needed in 1.2.

It will be a long time before 2.0 if we keep adding things at this stage.
Sigh.
Alright, I won't veto it... if this goes through, is there a rational for not
also adding hooks for per-child init and dies, which the folks building
interfaces to databases have asked for? There were two others suggested, too:
"Post config-read; so we can check consistency between directives and abort the
startup" and "Pre-handler; which asks round what could *potentially* be served
on a URI; gets back a list of possible internal redirects with the
mime-type/lang/charset and quality values".
