phoenix 4.0a startup problem

I downloaded and installed the phoenix release (congratulations). However
the following exception occurs

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/xml/sax/ContentHandler
	at
org.apache.avalon.phoenix.components.deployer.DefaultDeployer.<init>(DefaultDeployer.java:47)
	at java.lang.Class.newInstance0(Native Method)
	at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Class.java:237)
	at
org.apache.avalon.phoenix.components.embeddor.DefaultEmbeddor.createComponent(DefaultEmbeddor.java:424)
	at
org.apache.avalon.phoenix.components.embeddor.DefaultEmbeddor.createComponents(DefaultEmbeddor.java:246)
	at
org.apache.avalon.phoenix.components.embeddor.DefaultEmbeddor.initialize(DefaultEmbeddor.java:130)
	at org.apache.avalon.phoenix.frontends.CLIMain.startup(CLIMain.java:128)
	at org.apache.avalon.phoenix.frontends.CLIMain.execute(CLIMain.java:82)
	at org.apache.avalon.phoenix.frontends.CLIMain.main(CLIMain.java:64)
	at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Native Method)
	at org.apache.avalon.phoenix.launcher.Main.main(Main.java:54)

I placed xml.jar and xerces.jar in the classpath and tried again, but got
the same result.

This was not a problem in the version obtained and built from CVS.

I have, previously, removed all xml/xerces references from the classpath and
the jre. There are still references on the file system for the
Netbeans/forte.jboss installations. Only Netbeans runs on a regular basis,
and is currently running.

Any hints?

Bill Logan

Well, I'm not sure if this ratings thing is very favorable to the
project. People will look at it and conclude that the Avalon project has
10 developers, who voted a 10, and one user, who voted a 3 :-)

This is true. We are now at rank 6 on the ratings! 9.11.... not bad!

I voted. Also if you subscribe to the project it will raise its popularity.

Our overall rating is now 8.86:

3 - 1 vote
9 - 1 vote
10 = 5 votes

We are officially on the top 20 list--rank 12!

:/

I just resubmitted it.

It not much but I just voted - now up to 8.83/10.00 -- rank 24.

Yep.
One reason is that there are only 6 votes registered. To get up into the
top 20 "rating" list we only need a couple of additional votes. To take
Avalon into the top 3 above Lunix only requires an addition 5 high ranked
votes. So the easist thing is for supporters to head over to the site

:-)
Steve.

ps. Updated version of Phoenix are not registered on the site.

Okay, I just notified Freshmeat.

You know someone had the audacity to rate us a 3?

I tell you, I don't like rating systems that don't give meaningful feedback.

Our overall rating is 8.6/10--rank 123

That sucks.

ug. I made a change about 10 minutes before doing release. Tested the source
distribution ... not the binary one as I thought that was safe. That will
teach me ;( I will do another release right now.

The problem is xerces.jar is not included in ${phoenix.home}/lib, if you copy
it there then all should work fine.

BTW Phoenix completely ignores any CLASSPATH you specify to avoid any
versioning issues.
