Summary: "If GET is used it will also restrict HEAD requests."
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.2.0
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Core
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: dilyan.palauzov@aegee.org

Hello,
  In the documentation for <Limit>
(http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#limit) is mentioned that "If GET
is used it will also restrict HEAD requests". I concider this as unappropriate
behaviour:
For my webDAV-httpd instance, I want to allow to many users to upload files
and see the contents of the directory, where the files are uploaded. But I want
to allow only certain users to be able to download the files. I was not able to
make the needed configuration, cause limiting GET (for retrieving files) limits
also HEAD - for seeing the size fo the files, and this is what Nautilus uses.
So, I would like to have the opportunity to enable HEAD for some users and
disable GET.

------- Additional Comments From wrowe@apache.org 2006-04-17 14:29 -------
RFC 2616 is absolutely clear on this point, a HEAD request mirrors the
corresponding GET request. The client must not have to put up with any
other behavior for the server, so your request will not be considered.

Exploring further...

"For my webDAV-httpd instance, I want to allow to many users to upload files
and see the contents of the directory, where the files are uploaded."

Seeing the content of the directory has nothing to do with HEAD v.s. GET
permissions. It's the distinction between resources /foo/ (the directory
container) and /foo/.+ (entities within the directory). Please consult the
appropriate user forum for peer-to-peer support on how to configure exactly
what you are attempting to accomplish.
