Just a quick note, recent versions of openldap properly enable tcp keep alive
which fixes the original issue of the firewall killing idle connections. Just
tune the net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_* sysctl parameters according to your
firewall's timeout and all will be happy. However it would still be nice if
apache handled dead connections better by setting a timeout for any request it
makes, not just when opening a connection.
