Subversion 1.6.6 Win32 Installer Released
Posted by Troy <tr...@ebswift.com>.
I am happy to announce the release of the Subversion 1.6.6 win32 installer
based on D.J. Heap's win32 binaries.
Note, that this installer includes apache 2.2.x binaries (2.2.9 or higher is
required within the 2.2.x series).
If you lose your shortcuts from your programs menu when upgrading to this
version, please uninstall and re-install again. This *may* occur due to a
change in shortcut icons but shouldn't be an issue again.
The installer may be downloaded from the win32 download area here (watch

No, that wasn't it. I discovered just now that one of my machines could
read the file fine, and the other (where I had loaded it yesterday)
still said it was application/octet-stream. Clearing the Firefox cache
actually resolved the problem . So either the old version of the
Subversion server, or some oddity in Firefox was responsible for this.
Either way, thanks.

Subversion's own server was not updated to 1.6.6 until mid-morning
today US Eastern time. So you probably hit the server when it was
still running 1.6.5.

I'm getting text/plain for the content-type in Firefox 3.5.something.
IE does some content sniffing to decide how to handle pages, it
doesn't strictly go by the content-type header (at least last I knew).

I thought it had been fixed, but it obviously wasn't when I clicked the link in Hyrum's original email.
I'm using Windows, with Firefox 3.5, and the mime-type that is reported when I click this link is application/octet-stream.
However, I've just tried it in IE, and that looks correct so perhaps firefox's cache or our firewall or our proxy or our caching server or the anti-fun filtering server has gotten itself confused. Or I clicked the link before the server had been upgraded.

And as Hyrum indicated, this was fixed with 1.6.6. Have either of you
tried the link since the server was upgraded to 1.6.6?
BTW, it was not the past few releases, it was the past one release
(1.6.5) which introduced this change.

I can confirm what Andrew mentioned: every time I have loaded the past
few releases into Firefox on Windows, I have had to save it or open it
using another application. It will not display in the browser anymore.

Reads just fine to me.
Also, from CHANGES:
* revert r36720's default MIME type change back to "text/
plain" (issue #3508)
So the problem should be fixed without having to set the mime-type
(which is has never been).

You could probably tell by manually investigating the revision or
issue number associated with each item, but I agree that it would be
useful to include client vs. server information. Just a case of
finding the tuits.

I would just like to second this request. It's hard to request our IT staff to upgrade the server without a concrete list of server bug fixes to justify it.
I appreciate that the svn developers are resource constrained. Thanks for releasing 1.6.6.

Ok, question.
Is there any way when looking at the CHANGES file to determine if the changes were server side or client side? For example, we keep our clients up to date, but I really want to only upgrade the server (minor updates) if there is a fix that affects it. Considering I need to take it down for a time or do it after hours.
If there is no way to tell would it be possible in the future to list client and server changes separately in the CHANGES file?
Thanks,
BOb

Arguably, we could simply paste the CHANGES entry for a release
into its announcement mail, and save people from having to use a
web browser in the first place.

Because it leads to major usability problems and was a major
user-visible change in a patch release.
While the real answer might be "every file should have appropriate
svn:mime-type", in reality given svn's lack of repository-specified
autoprops that's a joke.

Because of the browser problem you just fixed by setting the mime-type
explicitly.

Because of the very issue you see with CHANGES now: too many textual
files everywhere do not have text/plain set.
It was discussed on this list (e.g., in the r36720 thread).

According to CHANGES, it's specific to mod_dav_svn 1.6.5:
* revert r36720's default MIME type change back to "text/plain" (issue #3508)

The 1.6.7 tag will have the same problem unless you update 1.6.x/CHANGES
and trunk/CHANGES too.

In fact that has nothing to do with upgrading the server. It's a simple
consequence of there not being an svn:mime-type property on that file;
apparently httpd's default content type on svn.collab.net is
application/octet-stream, which is reasonable.

The installer may be downloaded from the win32 download area here (watch
wrapping):

Odd. Must be a problem with izarc 4 on windows. I uncompressed it on
my linux machine and do not see the "extra" directory...
Sorry for the confusion.

I might be missing something, but the tarball I just unrolled only has
one directory in it: subversion-1.6.6. That directory has many
subdirectories, of which subversion-1.6.6/subversion is one, but it
does not have a subversion top-level-directory.

Was it intended that the 1.6.6.tar.gz file includes both a "subversion"
and
a "subversion-1.6.6" directory? That seems different from the previous
releases...
