   This seems to be a valuable improvement for Flink, but I would like to first get a quick yes or no from @StephanEwen, who has worked a lot on the S3 integration.
   If Stephan thinks the PR is a good fit for Flink, then I can help you merging it.
   
   By the way: I would suggest you to check out our [contribution guide](https://flink.apache.org/contribute-code.html#before-you-start-coding). We require our PRs be associated with a JIRA ticket. Once we have agreement on merging, I can help you creating the ticket.
