Re: New OpenEJB website

Jean-Louis forwarded me this image. The only text was in French, which I don't speak, but it's pretty safe bet to know what it is ;)

  http://openejb.staging.apache.org/images/newsite-tan.jpg

Looks nice! Way better than what we have and would be a great template to use for the launch.

If we could get "TomEE" worked into the logo, I think that'd be perfect for the launch. We can always do something else later, but this is at least new and different enough.

That is a big help! I'm headed to the airport in 5 minutes. But if someone can get you admin access to confluence you could start playing around with the template.

Jean-louis and Jonathan are admins as are a few others (those are just the ones I remember adding recently). They could hook you up.

Shoot me your confluence id. Maybe there'll be net in the airport.

Hi,

I tried to extract the relevant images [1] from the mockup. Does that
already help creating a template? Next step would be creating a CSS
for the various cast shadows in the left and right navigation panes.

Cheers
Daniel

PS: I noticed that the mockup did contain some blur because of the
JPEG format used to save the image.

That would be the perfect scenario, yes. :)

That's the idea. Or "an" idea at least :)

So call out the problem statement, the constraints and the final goal
in the beginning and you don't need to fear to having to fix whatever
pattern later on ;)

Cheers
Daniel

PS: I suspect the goal at hand is -- as I learned to understand it
while reading this thread again -- to turn the mockup image into some
templates to get the website online ASAP.

Yep. Vaguely stated at best.

> The icons I requested aren't even related to the website itself...

Right, was targeting the "collect ideas and get new proposal" statement which is dangerously close to "let's throw away what they gave us and try again". No one ever said that, just making sure we don't start a "bikeshed" pattern[1].

Probably the best way to phrase it:

We can paint the bikeshed as many times as we want

The fallacy of the bikeshed metaphore is that somehow everyone needs to agree on a color before you can paint the bikeshed. When in reality its a simple task and you can just paint the bikeshed and keep repainting it for as long as it takes.

I wouldn't call it perfectionism. It is just that the constraints and
goals weren't pretty clear at the beginning of this thread ;)

The icons I requested aren't even related to the website itself...

FYI, to all. Chatting with Sally who does all the Apache announcements and it looks like either the 5th or 6th will be the date. Anything later than that and JavaOne is essentially over. So if we don't have something in place by then, we'll end up launching with the old site.

If we get too picky I think we're going to learn a hard lesson in perfectionism.

My recommendation would be for us to get the actual template files for the site as shown in the pic. Someone here can work on getting that turned into a velocity template and up on the site. Then we can push a new round of requirements at the designers.

+1 to that of course. I expect that process will take a few weeks and whatever we come up with in the next couple days will only be the beginning of the process and not the end.

We can have a "beta" site for the beta release and a complete different site for the final.

That would actually be kind of fun.

Maybe if that's not to much, your graphics artist (designer) could try
to come up with several proposals for a new logo. That way we could
then vote on the one with the youngest/freshest look?

Hi,

Didn't get time yesterday to get something better. But, I can collect all
your ideas, requirements, etc and get a new proposal from our designers.

Hopefully on Monday.

We can certainly do that. I expect we'll keep playing with the site and possible TomEE logos for the next few weeks.

We just need something new in place for the announcement even if it's only temporary.

If a graphics artist is already working on a mockup, I'd like to ask
whether we could get the OEJB icon as a Windoze ico file and as an
Apple icns file? That way it could be reused in the Eclipse client, as
favicon and so on...

Icon specs for Windoze: 16x16 (8bit), 16x16 (32bit), 32x32 (8bit),
32x32 (32bit), 48x48 (8bit), 48x48 (32bit)
OS X icon specs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Icon_Image_format

Not sure whether Windoze 7 icons are already using 64x64 or greater...

Cheers
