patch

I had previously submitted this patch for version 1.1.0 and it doesn't
seem to be applied in the latest version.  Our software fails miserably
without this patch applied.  It is spurious and only on certain machines
types in a highly multi-threaded environment, but always fails at this
one place.  This patch fixes the problem, but my guess is that there is
a deeper underlying issue.
