RE: still can't send mail to external servers - SOLVED

It turns out the problem wasn't with James. I was running using DHCP.
Linux was overriding any DNS settings in James and forcing DNS
resolution through my DHCP server. When I changed the server to use a
static IP address and I provided the DNS server addresses in the network
configuration, everything got resolved properly.

That means that your system is not able to reach the specified DNS
server
(the first case).
