SESSIONS.ser (Too many open files)

Hi Experts,
I am facing a strange problem in my tomcat application.
Suddenly it generates following Exceptions

java.io.FileNotFoundException:
/server/http/site/music.yamaha.com/site/work/SESSIONS.ser (Too many open
files)
   at java.io.FileOutputStream.open(Native Method)
   ..
....

And some other application FNF

java.io.FileNotFoundException:
/server/http/site/ssd.com/site/dist/tilesCopy/en_US/siteTree.xml (Too
many open files)
   at java.io.FileInputStream.open(Native Method)
 ...
...

What might be the possible causes that generates such exception?
Some people suggested me to check whether application is running on
development mode, and if yes then change it to deployment mode i.e.
<context-param>
        <param-name>configuration</param-name>
       <param-value>deployment</param-value>
   </context-param>

I am not using any <context-param> in my web.xml.
I would appreciate your thoughtful suggestion.

regards,
Ranjan

You may find that lots of temporary files are staying open. Liberal use
of try/finally should solve this problem (assuming you find it).

You may need to have them install the package. On my Gentoo Linux system
, the package is simply 'lsof', so it's likely to be the same package
for RHEL.

Good luck!

I really appreciate with the kind of response I am getting from this list.

Yes, I believe there are some problem with application code. So instead
of increasing file descriptor limit, I am running lsof to find out what
are the files getting opened by application. Recently we have added lots
of images in our application and also upgraded castor to new version, so
I am also looking into part of code that manages castor/images.
Unfortunately lsof command is not running in my system and taking help
from sys admin to run this command.
Again thanks all for your help and I hope, I could find the problem.

Ranjan

For reasons i don't know, windows forbids removal of file to which there
are active handle.

just delete everything and look at what was not deleted? :p

Like always, google is your friend:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/Handle.mspx

You can also use Process Explorer (mentioned in another response), which
will show you file handles as well.

I wonder if there's any interest in a ClassLoader that will close JAR
files once they haven't been used in quite some time (like a day or so).
If you have a bunch of libraries in your webapp and they all get nearly
fully-loaded on startup, or after a few requests, then you could save a
bunch of file descriptors by closing those files.

Typical classloaders only load classes or resources actually requested,
so the .jar file remains open for the lifetime of the classloader, in
case another entry is needed.

Correct; those should be open only as long as it takes to read the
contents into a byte array.

Yup:

$ lsof -p pid

Looking at one of my java processes in a development environment, I see
77 open files (well, 77 lines of output).

This process is a Cocoon instance running on Tomcat. It has no database
connections. Most of the files opened are JAR files (not sure why they
stay open; the JVM must assume that an opened JAR file will eventually
be used again) and a few binary shared object (.so) files.

A more interesting application shows 89 files open. This one basically
has the same libraries and stuff open, and includes database connections
and mod_jk connections.

Note that individual class files are not counted here. One poster
asserted that class files and JSPs would require files to be opened:
this appears not to be the case.

I think, I got the root cause of this problem. After analyzing the lsof
output, I found lots of open xml files, and because of improper handling
of xml files by xml marshaller. Now I am going to rewrite marshaller and
close this issue.
I would like to thank all for your help, and this is really a great forum.

I got a tool called process explorer for windows.
After running lsof in linux, I got lits of files and its count is more

In his case, 1024 might be a quite low limit fora server. count jars/
classes files, compiled jsps, resources files, network connection,
logging files and it increases quite quickly

Just as I would caution anyone who is running out of memory to check to
see /why/ they were running out of memory before they blindly increase
the heap size, I have to caution you to investigate /why/ you are
running out of file handles before you blindly increase your file handle
limit.

Yes, increasing the file handle limit is likely to fix your problem, but
probably only temporarily. You may have a resource leak that is merely
going to take longer to hit if you increase your file handle limit.

In unix, opened pipe (stdout/stdin, etc) and network sockets are
considered opened files btw

Ok now I got it. default value for open files is 1024 and I think I need
to increase open file descriptor limit.
Thanks a lot, I hope not to get this problem again.

To see your current settings use 'ulimit -a'. If you want to make
permanent changes edit /etc/security/limits.conf
Everything in a system is a file, not just a single webpage, the default
are not enough for your requirements.

We dont have much file handling operations in our web applications, but
again I am going to look minutely all IO operations in my application.

its running on *Red Hat *Enterprise Linux AS 4. I am at all not good at
system programming, but I would love to know any such commands/utilities
exist that can tell me detail about what are the files getting opened in
my web application which results such exception.

I would think this would be the root issue: "Too many open files"

What OS are you running. Some limit the number of open file handles.
Also might want to check to be sure you are closing files when finished
with them in your webapp.
