Email Footers

Hey,

Just noticed we have a new footer on all our emails. I know I've not
been following the list super close this last month did I miss a
discussion about what should be included in the footer or is this just
a new Apache list thing?

Cheers

Martin

Well ... AMQP is supposed to be Fast and Reliable yeah?. Therefore
saying "Fast, Reliable" looks redundant.

Performance note.

Brief note,

Some of guys that work here on our realtime side of the house have made
some improvements in
the Linux kernel, which are part of our Red Hat MRG distribution.

The more general interesting part is that one aspect was back-ported to
RHEL 5.3 called private
futexes. This requires no re-compile etc. If you run RHEL, just update
to 5.3 and qpidd will
perform up to 20% better on throughput for high rates (> 500,000
Msg/sec) or high concurrency loads.
Latency is seems un-affected by this update, still at ~60us for RDMA and
180us for 10G.

enjoy
Carl.

You've just brought back to my mind a sentence from Monty Python Holy
Grail, perhaps it could add a bit of fun:

Apache Qpid: Message for you, Sir!

Perhaps it doesn't make a lot of sense if you didn't watch the movie...

Some more random ideas:

   Apache Qpid: Send a Message!
Apache Qpid: Messaging from the heart.
   Apache Qpid: We <3 messaging.

Also, for those who really like buzzwords, I think it may be worth
considering how the slogan will be presented, e.g. when presented like
this, there is room for both a memorable slogan and plenty of buzzwords:

       Apache Qpid: Send a Message!
    <------------------------------<3
     Fast, Reliable, AMQP, Messaging

This sort of suggests to me that we may actually be looking for two
things, the above the line portion being a true slogan that functions as
a hook for people to remember, and the stuff below the line which is
really more of an elevator pitch sort of thing. I think we should be
careful not to try to squeeze the elevator pitch into the slogan. IMHO
they can be more effective as two separate things.

Re: Qpid slogan?

Posted by Rafael Schloming <ra...@redhat.com>.
I tend to think the most important thing a slogan can do is grab the
attention of the reader, and while I do recognize it is tempting to try
to work in all the usual buzzwords (AMQP, Messaging, Enterprise, etc),
so far everything that does this ends up being so bland that it's almost
completely unmemorable.

I'd like to suggest that we consider another direction for the slogan.
Something that doesn't necessarily include all (or any) of the
buzzwords, but does grab enough of your attention that hopefully you
might consider reading further. I'd like to see a few options in this
vein before making a final decision.

So in the spirit of brainstorming, here are a few random ideas that (for
better or worse) would stick in my head longer than 3 seconds after
reading them.

Apache Qpid: Qpid is as Qpid does.

Apache Qpid: No pants. No shirts. Just middleware.[*]

   I'm with Qpid[**]
   ------------>

[*] Works best next to an appropriate logo, e.g.:
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/PLA/CMO1101~Amoretto-I-Posters.jpg

[**] Not really a slogan per/se, but would make a great T-shirt for Qpid
developers. ;)

My 2 cents: I think the term 'Enterprise' is often overused and
consequently has negative associations for some. I'd prefer leaving that
word out of any slogan. I also think it should either be demonstrably
true or bland enough to not be testable. ('Open Source AMQP Messaging'
would be my favourite of those I've seen - bland but clear and to the
point!)

Just keeping this thread going here is another summary of the
suggested slogans I added one more at the end, which is a combination
of two previous ones really. Tried to capture the 'love' angle for
Rob, highlighting the fact that you could never really fall in love
with messaging before AMQP.

Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
Apache Qpid: Fast, Reliable, AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging that just works.
Apache Qpid, Enterprise Messaging through AMQP
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging

Apache Qpid: Messaging for the AMQP Generation
Start AMQP Messaging with Apache Qpid
Apache Qpid: Standardised Messaging with AMQP
Got Messaging? Think AMQP. Think Apache Qpid.
Apache Qpid, messaging with added AMQP

Fall in love with messaging. Stay safe with Apache Qpid and AMQP.
Tell someone you love them. Give them the message with Apache Qpid and AMQP.

Fall in love with messaging for the first time. Apache Qpid: Open
Standard Messaging with AMQP

Lets see if we can narrow this down to a short list of less than 5 for a vote.

Fall in love with messaging. Stay safe with Apache Qpid and AMQP.
Tell someone you love them. Give them the message with Apache Qpid and AMQP.

I can't help feeling that we should try to work in a Qpid / Cupid /

I spent 5 minutes with sloganizer.net and realised that we need some
sort of positive statement (but not a measurable claim, and preferably
and absolute one rather than a statement relative to a competitor)
along with the words AMQP, Apache Qpid and Messaging.

Apache Qpid: Messaging for the AMQP Generation
Start AMQP Messaging with Apache Qpid
Apache Qpid: Standardised Messaging with AMQP
Got Messaging? Think AMQP. Think Apache Qpid.
Apache Qpid, messaging with added AMQP

Sadly at this point I ran out of ways to make messaging sound
exciting. Maybe I should start watching Mad Men.

I think they all have plus points (great ideas everyone). For me we need to
say what our project does (i.e. messaging) in the slogan and that it's AMQP.
I think the 'Apache' gives us the Open Source credential.

So, from my pov that leaves us with:

Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging <-- This one is my favourite i think.
Apache Qpid: Fast, Reliable, AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging that just works.
Apache Qpid, Enterprise Messaging through AMQP
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
What do other people think about one of these ?

Hi Josh,

Note that you will probably see compiler errors compiling in static release mode.

You will need to pick up InlineAllocator.h from trunk. See qpid-1458.

This fix didn't make it into M4.

I have a qpidbroker.exe that I just built with VS 2008, on Windows XP.
This particular binary is a Static Debug binary. I'm building the Release
Static binary as I type this. I don't have time at the moment to do
exhaustive testing on this binary - but it does run. Anyone want a copy

Hi Steve,

I knew you were busy with some client engagements, I did not volunteer
build one, though. If you feel like you are unable to make it soon, I
can come up with a bin dist. At the same time there is a requirement
to make a solution for samples as well. I can look into that as well.

Hi all,

Here's a summary of all the proposed slogans..

Apache Qpid: Open Source AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: Fast, Reliable, AMQP Messaging
Apache Qpid: AMQP Messaging from Point A to B in 10 microseconds or less!
Apache Qpid: *The* AMQP Implementation
Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful
Apache Qpid, Enterprise Messaging through AMQP
Apache Qpid, AMQP Enterprise Messaging
Apache Qpid - Fast, Reliable, Interoperable Enterprise Messaging
Apache Qpid - The Open Source AMQP Implementation

Keep on proposing I just wanted to summarize it to compare all of them.

+1.

I think we have two options here.

1. We never say that Qpid is an AMQP implementation. In which case, the
slogan should express some key attributes of AMQP. Therefore something like
"Apache Qpid - Fast, Reliable, Interoperable Enterprise Messaging" would
be nice.

2. We do express the fact that Qpid is an AMQP implementation. In which
case, the slogan should express the fact that we do it wright.
Therefore, something like
"Apache Qpid - The Open Source AMQP Implementation" sounds good.

I'd probably go for one slogan for all lists. I also think that we
should be explicit about being a messaging solution, not everybody
will know what Qpid or AMQP actually are. I

I've been using the thing in my .sig for a while now, but it's
probably not quite right for the project as a whole.

Generally, one wants to avoid (even implied) SLAs or other formal measurable
'commitments' in logos & slogans.

A couple of thoughts:

- Apache Qpid: *The* AMQP Implementation

- Apache Qpid: Advanced Messaging, Quick, Purposeful

I'm sure that there may be some better variants to Quick & Purposeful!

Homepage plus the blog address would be fine. I think we should we come
up with a nice slogan for Qpid as well. "AMQP Messaging Implementation"

I suggested that we add a footer, I don't have the power to actually
enable it, and I'm not sure how the decision was made.

I can't prove it, I have the word of someone who does this
professionally that it makes a significant difference. But the other
thing is that this content is placed in several mailing list archives in
other places where there is no reference at all to our web page. I'd
like to know that any time someone is reading one of our pages, there's
a route from there to qpid.apache.org. And I do suspect it will also
help with page ranking, but I can't prove it to you. Which is generally
true of search engine optimization, proofs are hard to come by.

What I can say is this: The fact that a mailing list has this footer,
and the content of the mailing list is closely related to terms relevant
to the content of the page to which the footer points, is a really good
indicator that the URL in the footer points to something related to
what's being discussed in the mailing list. That's not lost on humans,
and as far as I can tell, it's not lost on Google.

It's as big an issue as the email traffic dedicated to it ;->

But I do think it helps people and search engines find us. And that's
something we should want, our web site is not something people easily
stumble on if they are not looking for it.

Our volunteer that researched it had asked infra if it can be done. I
cc'ed on that mail with
a sample header. Personally I am not as concerned as you - as we have
CTR on most of the
project and it is not something like a release that has to be voted.

As it is trivial to change with no consequence. I would suggest we
discuss, etc, then if we want
to change it or remove it we do so... let's only ask infra to change it
once if make a change.

Martin,

can you lead us to consensus on this topic.

Whilst I'm not totally against a footer per say the enabling of the
footer without a vote or much discussion on the content is what is
most against the Apache way in my view.

If the point of the change is to game Google then I would be very
surprised if Google actually farmed mailing lists sites for urls.
Sending few 100,000 emails to a list to gain page rank sounds like
something Google would have already caught on to.

If we are to have a footer I would at least suggest the following two
links on both lists. The number of people that ask how to unsubscribe
is > 0 so having the details in the email would be most useful.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
To unsubscribe, e-mail: <list>-unsubscribe@qpid.apache.org
For additional commands, e-mail: <list>-help@qpid.apache.org

As for having the project name and url my quick look through the
mailing lists I'm subscribed to go both ways (for those that have
footers).

For me it really a burning issue more a waste of my Gmail storage as
Gmail will automatically hide the footer.

Regards

Martin

But that doesn't do anything at all to direct people to
http://qpid.apache.org. If someone is interested enough to find us via
Google, we want them to be directed to that page. And we'd also like
Google to give that page a better page rank.

No, but most things that do provide a way to get that information
easily if they want it and some, like Nabble, provide a way to
subscribe with 3 clicks. Not a huge burden really.

I guess my nose is a little out of joint because it was discussed

The message headers that contain this information are often hidden by
both email programs and archives, e.g.

http://n2.nabble.com/Email-Footers-td2186076.html

So this information may well be hidden from people who find us via
