Extending the life of an older desktop machine by installing OpenOffice?

Have you extended the life of an older PC or Mac by installing
OpenOffice and other open source packages?

Have you helped others do this? Do you refurbish old PCs as a
business and install OpenOffice as part of that?

If so, and you would like to share some tips in a story I'm working
on, please contact me off-line.

Thanks!

With the money I saved on Open Source packages I could afford a new PC.:-D

I have a MacBook that originally ran OS X 10.4 (2005). Apple no
longer provides an OS X version that will run on it. I am presently
running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with no problems. I can run the latest versions
of both AOO and LO. I can also run Calibre and Sigil which I use for
converting *.odt files to ePUB format. I can use the latest wireless
security as well.

It is an answer.

Again; Whether you use LO/OO or MS "Office" doesn't make much of a
difference concerning the usability of older hardware. It's whether you
run LO/OO on MS (Not Responding) or on a decent Linux (I wouldn't use
Ubuntu, btw.) that makes the difference for usability.

Almost the same category. Thanks to its Unix foundation, MacOS X doesn't
have the same "cursor animation syndrome" as MS (Not Responding), but
concerning support of newer releases for older hardware, it's probably
just as bad.

Sincerely,

Wolfgang

Seems like yours is a personal opinion rather than an answer to
the original question. Your comment about Microsoft has nothing to do
with this question. Then again I do not know whether you consider OS X
to be in the same category as any of the Windows versions.
More likely, the issue is about two operating systems that have
the reputation of continuing to require computer upgrades with newer
versions (planned obsolescence) . There is no attempt to provide an
operating system for older computers.
For example, I have a MacBook that was one of the early Intel
based motherboards. It runs OS X 10.4. It is too old to run any of the
current OS X operating systems (cost too much even if it could). For
WiFi, it only uses WPA; so I can not use it to connect to any secure
network even if I knew the password. Yet, Ubuntu runs fine on this
laptop with WPA2 available.
Another example, I had a laptop from 1998 running Windows 98SE
with 180MB RAM. A couple of years ago, I could run Kubuntu with a
desktop that would run on limited RAM amounts. That was 10 years after I
got the laptop!

The upgrade price for Leopard was US $129. Tiger came with all the original Intel Macs, so
there was no upgrade for them. An upgrade to Tiger for PowerPC Macs was also US $129.

Apple has dropped the upgrade prices. Snow Leopard was originally US $29, now only $19.99
online at the Apple Store. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

Lion(you have to call support to get it) and Mountain Lion (online at the App Store) are $19.99.

> Besides I prefer to do a clean install with a complete operating system rather than an upgrade.

That is one option when upgrading. Never done it myself since I didn't see any need to do so.

A few years ago, I talked with the people in the local Apple store
after Leopard came out about the cost of upgrading. I was informed that
I would have to pay for Tiger and Leopard. That came to $360 (180 each).
That seems too much for two upgrades. Besides I prefer to do a clean
install with a complete operating system rather than an upgrade. Perhaps
the prices at the Apple store have changed since then, but the sales
personnel had the wrong attitude as far as I am concern. So they have
lost a potential customer.
So, I may be wrong about the current practices of the Apple store.

The first generation MacBook (Model Identifier: MacBook1,1) will run OS X ver. 10.6.8 (Snow
Leopard). 2nd generation and newer will run Ver. 10.7 (Lion)

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Costs $19.99 from the Apple store. I that too expensive? Lion is the
same price but requires Snow Leopard to be installed on your computer.

My MacBook (MacBook2,1) with OS X ver. 10.6.8 connects to WPA 2 protected networks. If Ubuntu
gives you WPA 2 access, Snow Leopard will as well

The issue of making old computers (or *any* computer) usable is to
install an actual *operating* system (i.e. one that *works*) as a
replacement for that pathologically non-operating system Microsoft (Not
Responding) (TM).

All my own computers run Linux. Only my ThinkPad has Windows on it, but
that's because it came with it installed. Regardless, it spends most of
it's time running Linux. I'm currently running OpenSUSE 12.3, but my
firewall is running 11.4. In the same theme, both my smart phone and
tablet run Android.

Dear Mr. Rob Weir,

I am using an old desk top. I have installed Ubuntu 11.01. This comes with
Libre Office, as you know. And all other softwares and programs are from
open source. I do web design, photo editing, video editing, Printed Circuit
Board Design, and above all use text documents and spreadsheets. All using
open source.

With Warm Regards

I have on occasion used an older computer by installing Linux on it and
that install would include Open Office or Libre Office. Linux tends to
run better than Windows on older hardware. In general, I try to avoid
proprietary software whenever possible. I have never had occasion to
use a Mac. I also encourage friends & family to use open source
software whenever possible. About 10 years ago, I worked for a company
that used Open Office, but I figured it was because they were too cheap
to pay for anything they could avoid. ;-)
