Release and Reserve specific inventory item

There will be instances where one has to release the inventory reserved by
the system and instead ship specific serialized items. This is true
especially when you manufacture large number of electrical/electronic
serialized goods. When they are shipped it becomes a pain locating the
exact serial numbers that the system wants us to ship. It could be due to a
variety of factors, but mainly for the small and medium businesses it is
due to limited storage space.

What is the best way to release the reserved items and them ship specific
serialized items? I'm considering that a change during the packing stage
where the serial numbers are entered/scanned which can then call a service
to release reserved inventory and re-reserve the specific item would make
sense. Any thoughts? Has someone already done this?
