Connection Pool using struts

Hi ,
  I have been using connection pool generated by struts using the parameters in <data-source> tags of struts-config.xml, (database used is mysql 4.0.18)  in my web application . Everything seems to be fine but at times the connections in the pool are lost and application fails to work, there is no other option but to restart Tomcat , Also I need to know how to catch exception thrown by Connection Pool manager so that I am able to handle it properly ,at the moment when connection isnt available it throws this error:

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Can't get definitions factory from context.
	at org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.service(JspServletWrapper.java:254)
	at org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.serviceJspFile(JspServlet.java:295)
