I have figured out the build problem that I experienced earlier on Mac OS X
10.3.

The proper flags are not being sent to the linker.

Add to LDFLAGS in the src/Makefile:
-Wl,-framework,Python 

The beta will then build cleanly out of the box.  What I don't know is the 
changes necessary so that configure will automatically set this up.
