java.net.SocketException: Connection reset POP3server

hello,
i am currently using James 2.0a2 without problems except for SMTP AUTH with netscape and OS X clients. i am trying to upgrade to james-2.1a1-2002-08-18 because of its ability to accept authentication from these clients. i am running James on a WinXP Home machine with JRE1.4.1rc installed and have been testing the configuration with the server machine and another WinXP Home machine on my network with Outlook Express 6. the installation of james-2.1a1-2002-08-18 works fine when configured as localhost. i should mention that i experience the same problem with James 2.0a3.

i'm not really sure what you mean, i think file. my configuration is "out of
the box" with the exception of servername, dns, auth true, and i comment out
mailet match="RemoteAddrNotInNetwork=127.0.0.1". i don't change anything
else.

Re: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset POP3server

Posted by JRC <po...@neonkiwi.com>.
with the help of the kind people who subscribe to this list i've managed to
create a frankenstein James 2.0a2 + SMTPHandler.java 2.1a1 that seems to
work just fine for me. no SocketExceptions on the POP3 side and proper SMTP
AUTH for netscape clients...........can't test the OS X client so i'll just
hope it works.......

thanks everybody

That's just weird. I don't believe that it is a James problem, though. I
am running on Sun Java 1.3.0 Server VM on RH 6.2 with no such problems.

Have you tried a telnet session on your own to check?

for some reason there is a difference in messages when using jre1.3.1 vs.
jre1.4.1. i was using 1.4.1 with the last post and 1.3.1 with this one. what
do i need to do to fix it at my side?

RE: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset POP3server

Posted by "Noel J. Bergman" <no...@devtech.com>.
Connection reset by peer (the "by peer" part is important) means that the
other side reset the connection. The server side needs to handle it
gracefully, but isn't the cause of the exception. The last log you posted
didn't have the "by peer" indicated.

Re: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset POP3server

i went back to jre1.3.1_04 and tried again. i did a google search on
"java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer: JVM_recv in socket
input stream read"
and received a few returns but nothing i could understand. i've also
included my phoenix.log in case it will help.

RE: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset POP3server

Posted by "Noel J. Bergman" <no...@devtech.com>.
As I understand it, there are two socket reset conditions:

1) ECONNRESET

Connection reset by peer. Verify destination communication software is
active and ready to accept connections before proceeding.

2) ENETRESET

Remote host dropped network communications. Verify the communication
software on the remote host you were communicating with is available and
ready to accept connections.

The above was cut & paste from an IBM diagnostics web page.

If the Sun code is anything like the GNU code, the JVM is just reporting an
ENETRESET error bubbling up from the socket layer (q.v.,
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/java-patches/2001-q3/msg00023.html).

FWIW, the earlier bug I was recalling had to do with connection timeouts,
which was a bug in the Windows JVM. That bug was fixed by the person adding
an explicit socket.setSoTimeout( timeout ); statement to the handler
code, but I don't bebelive that it has been committed to the CVS.
