I've had this problem with this version and previous versions of AOO. Almost
every time I try to open the thesaurus, the program crashes. I've learned to
save all my documents before attempting to use the thesaurus, but it would be
nice if it would stop crashing.

This behavior is not typical. Dictionnaries extension works with no problem.
So many crashes are cured by resetting the AOO profile.

I couldn’t recreate the problem with version 4.1.2 on Windows 8. The
description suggests that the error occurs every time the thesaurus is
accessed. I had no such problem and was working perfectly fine for me. Are
there any other things that you may believe could have contributed to the
problem? Does it actually occur every time?
