OK, considering that you had dropped the maven repository before, there
must have been some faulty file in the your previous checkout.

> But I suppose is not meant to be this way...

Most definitively not. At the moment the released milestone versions are
a little bit old. But the idea is that most users should not need to
check out anything at all. It should be enough to run a Maven archetype
(http://cocoon.zones.apache.org/dev-docs/1159_1_1.html) command and
modify the resulting project by adding the needed blocks to the pom.
Then everything needed will be downloaded automatically during build.

And for a developer it would be enough to check out the blocks that one
want to work on, and the rest could be automatically downloaded by Maven.

Most of the time Maven actually is very convenient to use, especially
since they upgraded to a powerful enough server for the repository. The
main problem is that when anything goes wrong, one have to learn much
more about how Maven and the repository works than one might want to :/

Dropped the Maven local repository and re-ran the build: no hope.

Dropped settings.xml and svn-updated to recreate it: no joy.

Dropped (again) the local maven repository, dropped the cocoon-2.2
checkout, did a fresh checkout... and Cocoon eventually worked.

But I suppose is not meant to be this way...

Sounds frustrating :/

I followed exactly the same steps as you have described in your mails,
and for me it works.

I assume that you get the same errors as before? In that case something
is wrong with your Maven setup. The cocoon-webapp module doesn't depend
on cocoon-core-main-sample anymore, so the fact that it shows in your
stack trace means that it is not the poms from your newly updated Cocoon
that is used. Probably some old poms and maybe also some old jars are
downloaded during the build process. Also the error messages looks like
problems that I and others have fixed some while ago. Which also is a
reason to believe that some older versions of the jars are downloaded
and executed.

Jorg wrote some while ago that there can be problems with some settings
file pointing to mirrors with artifacts that are not synchronized
properly
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=116404436302770&w=2.
You could see if his suggestions help.

Otherwise you need to figure out why cocoon-core-main-sample becomes
part of your cocoon-webapp during build. If you rebuild cocoon-webapp
using the -X switch you will get a complete tree view of all the
dependencies. So here we would need to know the dependency chain for the
cocoon-core-main-sample jar.

Also you could take a look in target/cocoon-webapp/WEB-INF/lib and see
if the cocoon-core-main-sample jar and in that case see if its
META-INF/cocoon/spring/cocoon-core-main-sample-blockServlet.xml is
identical to the one in your source tree.

If the latest version of cocoon-core is the one that is actually
executed, the content of the COB-INF directory in
cocoon-core-main-sample should be unpacked in
target/work/blocks/cocoon-core-main-sample.

/Daniel

Unfortunately it doesn't.

So, I updated the SVN working copy, deleted the whole cocoon branch of
the maven repo, executed a clean build and yet I cannot make Cocoon
run... despiriting indeed.

Luca (and others), delete your org/apache/cocoon directory from your local repo
and build cocoon again. Maybe this helps ...

I zapped the contents of cocoon-webapp/target and rebuilt: no joy.

Well, actually
blocks\cocoon-core-sample\cocoon-core-main-sample\src\main\resources\META-INF\cocoon\spring\cocoon-core-main-sample-blockServlet.xml
has the correct value of blockContextURL (I did an svn update, so this
doesn't come as a surprise to me).

How can I be sure to have your exact configuration: dropping the maven
repo and build everything from scratch (how painful !) ?

There is still something strange in your setup. As you can see above,
Cocoon (in o.a.c.core.deployment.DeploymentUtil I would assume) reads
from the jar: cocoon-core-main-sample-1.0.0-SNAPSHOT.jar, which not
should be on the dependency list from recent cocoon-webapp checkouts.
Probably there is an old version of the jar in your
cocoon-webapp/target/cocoon-webapp/WEB-INF/lib/ directory.

We have updated the deployment mechanism recently, and I got the same
error message a short period before I updated the bean configuration in
META-INF/cocoon/spring/cocoon-core-main-sample-blockServlet.xml for
cocoon-core-main-sample. To work the value of the property
blockContextURL in the configuration file should be
blockcontext:/cocoon-core-main-sample/ instead of a relative URL as it
was before. So you probably either get an old version of the
cocoon-core-main-sample or an old version of cocoon-core.
...

Then something else must differ. I don't know that much about the
working of the shielding classloader. Maybe Carsten has some hypothesis.

I always do a clean install... I already had my fingers burnt a few times ;)

Anyway, after an "svn up" and a clean install with shieeldingclassloader
set to false, the error has changed, but an error it still is.

I issued:

mvn jetty:run -X -Dorg.apache.cocoon.mode=dev

It's the same environment for me as well.

I don't know exactly how to solve it but you might get some insight from
the previous thread
http://www.mail-archive.com/dev@cocoon.apache.org/msg47740.html. The
lacking method is part of Java 5 but not Java 1.4. Cocoon has a
dependency on xml-apis-1.3.02.jar that contains the right version of
javax.xml.transform. So probably an older version of the library shadows
the right one in you classpath. Use the -X switch to jetty:run to see
what classpath you use. It might be that it is the one from Java 1.4, in
that case you could try to use the shielding classloader, it works for
some people.

Hi, all,

I try to get started with cocoon 2.2
I got it built with "mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false clean install"
ant run with "mvn jetty:run -Dorg.apache.cocoon.mode=dev"

But when I try to request any page I have the following error on the
response page:

Yes, I found out (by building with -X) that it is the batik block that
include the faulty avalon jar. And I had added the batik block my self
for testing purposes.

This is strange, I don't have this jar on my class path. It is probably
a leftover from a build without the
-Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false switch. Try a "mvn
-Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false clean install" in the cocoon-webapp.

Actually a "mvn war:exploded" is even better as it is much faster
(doesn't build the war file), and doesn't call the deployer.

And here we can see that shielding classloader seem to be called anyway.
Probably the web.xml is patched to use the shielding stuff after an
earlier build.

The next question is of course why the shielding classloader doesn't
work in some environments. It works for me (jdk1.5.0_06, Windows XP).

Hi Luca, following Reinhard Poetz advice:
"Luca (and others), delete your org/apache/cocoon directory from your
local repo and build cocoon again. Maybe this helps ... "

and after:
mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false
-Dallblocks clean install

cd core/cocoon-webapp
mvn jetty:run-exploded -Dorg.apache.cocoon.mode=dev

works fine:

~/dev/c22/cocoon_trunk/core/cocoon-webapp patrick$ mvn

A last thing which may lead to significant difference is Maven

I let commented out mirrors for you to play with in case the only one I

of priorities given to defined mirrors so take my advice with care...

Hope this may help you,

I checked out the latest trunk sources and built it using:
mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false clean
install
and a couple more
mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false install
(no clean) to get around naugthy mirrors no providing what I needed.

Then cd core/cocoon-webapp/
mvn package
mvn jetty:run
No single problem !

In dists/cocoon-dist-samples/
mvn package still gives the exact same error as above even when run
several times (whithout clean of course)

mvn jetty:run still plays the samples nicely ...

Test Context:

Cocoon trunk at revision 480141
java version "1.5.0_06" on MacOSX 10.4.6
Maven version: 2.0.4

I did not read the thread yet but I will. Maybe is there something more
I overlooked.

Thanks for the hint,

I saw some of the problems about 10 days ago, but now everything works fine,
with and without the shielding classloader. For me it's no problem to remove the
deployer and the shielding for now.

I will come back to the deployment topic as soon as I have (hopefully)
integrated the reloading classloader in the same way like the shielding classloader.

So, what about making not using the deployer the default? E.g. by
putting it in a profile in the poms. There have been several people
trying out the trunk lately, (which is really great), and several of
them have had problems with the deployer and shielding. IMO we should
make it as easy as possible for new people to start experimenting and
develop Cocoon 2.2.

With the shielding it seem to be some bug in some environments, but it
doesn't happen for me, so there is not much I can do in helping out.

and as being said, the deployer isn't really necessary if you don't need
shielding or want to patch your web.xml.

The cocoon:deploy plugin expects a certain directory to be present, that
is created a little bit later in the plugin. If you build it twice it
will work. See
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=116414054703369&w=2 and

The problem seems to happen at cocoon:deploy ... But the above
stacktrace does not seem very useful, at least to me...

Although it's not as FATAL as it claims. It does not prevent me to
successfully use mvn jetty:run afterward.
I could even successfully deploy and run the produced cocoon-samples.war
in apache-tomcat-5.5.20

Test Context:

Cocoon trunk at revision 480034
Java version "1.5.0_09" on Linux
(I will test that on MacOSX jdk 1.5 soon and report).
Maven version: 2.0.4

I have had problems lately with that an avalon-framework-4.0.jar (from
2002!) is included in target/cocoon-webapp/WEB-INF/lib. It shadows the
Avalon framework 4.3 jars that Cocoon depends on and give a stack trace
similar to yours. Remove the faulty jar and try to run Cocoon again.

No idea why the 4.0 is included, some transitive dependency must be
faulty. It didn't happen some weeks ago.

Some other points: jetty:run-exploded seem to do some unnecessary extra
work compared to jetty:run. Use the -e switch for jetty:run so that you
get the whole stack trace. Otherwise it is very hard to see what is the
problem.

Thanks for this bit of information, but Cocoon doesn't run yet.

I did:
mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true -Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false clean
install
cd core/cocoon-webapp
mvn jetty:run-exploded -Dorg.apache.cocoon.mode=dev

But...

um... yes.

Anyway, it definitely has "shield", "class", and "load" in it
somewhere. That much I'm sure of... :-/

cheers,

Looking at the source:

/tools/cocoon-block-deployer/cocoon-deployer-plugin/src/main/java/org/apache/cocoon/maven/deployer/AbstractDeployMojo.java:
     * @parameter expression="${maven.war.shieldingclassloader}"

shouldn't it be :
-Dmaven.war.shieldingclassloader=false

Just to make sure.

oops, my bad... no, it should be "shieldedclassloader".

I built Cocoon with: mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true
-Dshieldedclassloading=false clean install

and run within the Jetty mvn plugin, but no joy.

Is the name of this property correct ?

Per some other recent threads: try "-Dshieldedclassloading=false" in
your mvn.
