Can you Produce a "Quality" EBook with Open Office or Open Office Writer...
Hi,
I am a writer, and I have been pleasantly taken aback by Open
Office... I had been struggling with Word 2003 for years, and not realised your
own program had progressed so much, and was quite so comprehensive!
Nevertheless the links did not work for information, which I wished to
ascertain, so I was left with little option, but to contact yourselves in
regard to these.
Firstly, I have a rather successful writing friend, who wishes for me to
use Scrivener, due to the fact that this is particularly useful in producing
an Ebook, which I intend to launch my next book as: _The Tallest Dwarf_
(http://www.quirkyclaus.com/The_Tallest_Dwarf_Comic_Fantasy_Books.htm) <<<
*Link !
However I am finding the program almost prohibitively difficult to
utilise...
The Tallest Dwarf, comprises as well as the main storyline - of course...
"extensive" footnotes, which 'must' be presented to their optimum in a
future production of the EBook.
What is "Open Office Writer" for instance... I like Open Office, but
well... is 'this' really what I'd be better using?
I am quite reluctant to use Scrivener for creating the format to an EBook,
as well only not is the program difficult to comprehend, I do not really
find the mechanism appealing.
Any assistance you may offer in this please...?

To use OpenOffice Writer with any success you need to use its its Styles feature, rather than Direct Formatting.

You can modify the inbuilt Styles to match your desire. You will find a brief exposition of these at
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide/Writer/Styles
and on the detail in links from that page,

There are two (at least) equivalents to Scrivener
Plume Creator at
http://www.plume-creator.eu/site/index.php/en/
and
oStoryBook at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ostorybook/files/?source=navbar
Both of these are currently undergoing extensive rewriting. Of the existing, I find Plume Creator more stable, although oStoryBook is perhaps slightly fuller featured. The current release of this (4.9.14) is unstable so I'd advise using one of the earlier releases.
But in the event that the work is complete and well ordered, there is no need to use such an external application, whose main function is overview and reordering of the sections of text. In the case of a well-ordered work, Writer will give good layout and formatting facilities, good search and replace, good spell checking. It also has the advantage that the file Writer outputs (in .odt format) can be fed directly into Calibre, at
http://calibre-ebook.com/
which is the epublication converter par excellence.

EPUB does not support footnotes, and XHTML/HTML code exported by OO.o is
rather terrible. You are better use some specialized software, especially
Adobe one.

OpenOffice Writer is OpenOffice's module for writing text documents, so
"OpenOffice" means "OpenOffice Writer" in your case. Other modules
include spreadsheets, presentation, database.
You can produce EPUB files from OpenOffice Writer if you install this
free extension:
http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/writer2epub
(there are probably other ones, search the Extensions site in case).
Regards,
Andrea.
