commit d5fb7efbd1d82b1670ae5bad84fa737db15bb8ca
Author: Tristan van Berkom <tr...@codethink.co.uk>

    doc/source/developing/workspaces.rst: Rewriting documentation surrounding `bst workspace reset`

    This section of the documentation now explains how incremental builds work
    by default in an open workspace, and points out that `bst workspace reset`
    can be used to ensure the configure commands get run again.

 From this point we have several options. If the source is under version control
 we can commit our changes and push them to the remote repository.

-Making bigger changes
----------------------

-The first time you build with your workspace BuildStream behaves very similarly to
-normal. However for subsequent builds it does not run the configuration commands and
-only runs the build commands. This can result in significant speed ups as the configuration
-commands can be slow (maybe 20+ minutes for a moderate sized element)
+Incremental builds
+------------------
+Once you have opened up your workspace, the workspace build directory will be
+reused for subsequent builds, which should improve your edit/compile/test cycle
+time when working with an open workspace.

-Sometimes you do need to rerun the configuration command for a open workspace, this
-can be done by resetting the workspace, and then running a build. However this will
-cause all of your incremental work to be lost. In this case running a soft reset will
-reset the trigger to run the configuration commands but will not change any files in you
-workspace.
+In order to optimize incremental builds, BuildStream treats build configure steps
+separately from the main build steps, and will only call the
+:func:`Element.prepare() <buildstream.element.Element.prepare>` method on
+an element plugin the first time it gets built. This avoids needlessly rebuilding
+objects due to header files and such being unconditionally recreated by configuration
+scripts (such as the typical ``./configure`` script which is called for ``autotools``
+elements for instance).

-Reasons to soft reset a workspace include:
- * changing the configuration command of a element.
- * adding a new source that the configure command will spot and enable more code.
+A caveat of this optimization however is that changes you might make to the
+configuration scripts will not be taken into account by default on the next
+incremental build. A forced reconfiguration can also be required in some cases
+where build scripts automatically detect sources in it's configuration phase,
+so newly added sources you add might be ignored.

-The soft reset can be performed by:
+In order to force the configuration step to be called again on the next build,
+you can use :ref:`bst workspace reset --soft <invoking_workspace_reset>`, like so:
+
+In these cases, you can perform a hard reset on the workspace using
+:ref:`bst workspace reset <invoking_workspace_reset>`, like so:

 .. raw:: html
    :file: ../sessions/developing-soft-reset.html

-Then the next build will include the configuration commands. You must reset the workspace
-every time you wish to trigger the configuration commands as only the first build
-after the reset will run them.
+This will ensure that the next time you run the build, BuildStream will forcefully
+rerun the :func:`Element.prepare() <buildstream.element.Element.prepare>` method
+and cause the configuration step to occur again.

-# For projects using AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR([foo]), Autoconf sets
-# $ac_aux_dir to '$srcdir/foo'. In other projects, it is set to
-# '$srcdir', '$srcdir/..', or '$srcdir/../..'.
-#
-# Of course, Automake must honor this variable whenever it calls a
-# tool from the auxiliary directory. The problem is that $srcdir (and
-# therefore $ac_aux_dir as well) can be either absolute or relative,
-# depending on how configure is run. This is pretty annoying, since
-# it makes $ac_aux_dir quite unusable in subdirectories: in the top
-# source directory, any form will work fine, but in subdirectories a
-# relative path needs to be adjusted first.
-#
-# $ac_aux_dir/missing
-# fails when called from a subdirectory if $ac_aux_dir is relative
-# $top_srcdir/$ac_aux_dir/missing
-# fails if $ac_aux_dir is absolute,
-# fails when called from a subdirectory in a VPATH build with
-#          a relative $ac_aux_dir
-#
-# The reason of the latter failure is that $top_srcdir and $ac_aux_dir
-# are both prefixed by $srcdir. In an in-source build this is usually
-# harmless because $srcdir is '.', but things will broke when you
-# start a VPATH build or use an absolute $srcdir.
-#
-# So we could use something similar to $top_srcdir/$ac_aux_dir/missing,
-# iff we strip the leading $srcdir from $ac_aux_dir. That would be:
-#   am_aux_dir='\$(top_srcdir)/'`expr "$ac_aux_dir" : "$srcdir//*\(.*\)"`
-# and then we would define $MISSING as
-#   MISSING="\${SHELL} $am_aux_dir/missing"
-# This will work as long as MISSING is not called from configure, because
-# unfortunately $(top_srcdir) has no meaning in configure.
-# However there are other variables, like CC, which are often used in
-# configure, and could therefore not use this "fixed" $ac_aux_dir.
-#
-# Another solution, used here, is to always expand $ac_aux_dir to an
-# absolute PATH. The drawback is that using absolute paths prevent a

-## There are various ways to get dependency output from gcc. Here's
-## why we pick this rather obscure method:
-## - Don't want to use -MD because we'd like the dependencies to end
-## up in a subdir. Having to rename by hand is ugly.
-## (We might end up doing this anyway to support other compilers.)
-## - The DEPENDENCIES_OUTPUT environment variable makes gcc act like
-## -MM, not -M (despite what the docs say). Also, it might not be
-## supported by the other compilers which use the 'gcc' depmode.

-## The problem is that when a header file which appears in a .P file
-## is deleted, the dependency causes make to die (because there is
-## typically no way to rebuild the header). We avoid this by adding
-## dummy dependencies for each header file. Too bad gcc doesn't do
-## this for us directly.
-## Some versions of gcc put a space before the ':'. On the theory
-## that the space means something, we add a space to the output as
-## well. hp depmode also adds that space, but also prefixes the VPATH

-.. _examples_flatpak_autotools:
-
-Building on a Flatpak SDK
-=========================
-Here we demonstrate how to build and run software using
-a Flatpak SDK for the base runtime.
-
-.. note::
-
- This example is distributed with BuildStream
-   in the `doc/examples/flatpak-autotools
-   <https://github.com/apache/buildstream/tree/master/doc/examples/flatpak-autotools>`_
-   subdirectory.
-
-
-Project structure
------------------
-
-The following is a simple :ref:`project <projectconf>` definition:
-
-``project.conf``
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-.. literalinclude:: ../../examples/flatpak-autotools/project.conf
-   :language: yaml
-
-Here we use an :ref:`arch option <project_options_arch>` to allow
-conditional statements in this project to be made depending on machine
-architecture. For this example we only support the ``i386`` and ``x86_64``
-architectures.
-
-Note that we've added a :ref:`source alias <project_source_aliases>` for
-the ``https://dl.flathuhb.org/`` repository to download the SDK from.
-
-
-``elements/base/sdk.bst``
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-.. literalinclude:: ../../examples/flatpak-autotools/elements/base/sdk.bst
-   :language: yaml
-
-This is the :mod:`import <elements.import>` element used to import the
-actual Flatpak SDK, it uses an :mod:`ostree <sources.ostree>` source to
-download the Flatpak since these are hosted in OSTree repositories.
-
-While declaring the :mod:`ostree <sources.ostree>` source, we specify a GPG
-public key to verify the OSTree download. This configuration is optional
-but recommended for OSTree repositories. The key is stored in the project directory
-at ``keys/gnome-sdk.gpg``, and can be downloaded from https://sdk.gnome.org/keys/.
-
-We also use :ref:`conditional statements <format_directives_conditional>` to decide
-which branch to download.
-
-For the ``config`` section of this :mod:`import <elements.import>` element,
-it's important to note two things:
-
-* **source**: We only want to extract the ``files/`` directory from the SDK,
-
- This is becase Flatpak runtimes dont start at the root of the OSTree checkout,
- instead the actual files start in the ``files/`` subdirectory
-
-* **target**: The content we've extracted should be staged at ``/usr``
-
- This is because Flatpak runtimes only contain the data starting at ``/usr``,
- and they expect to be staged at ``/usr`` at runtime, in an environment
- with the appropriate symlinks setup from ``/``.
-
-
-``elements/base/usrmerge.bst``
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-.. literalinclude:: ../../examples/flatpak-autotools/elements/base/usrmerge.bst
-   :language: yaml
-
-This is another :mod:`import <elements.import>` element, and it uses
-the :mod:`local <sources.local>` source type so that we can stage files
-literally stored in the same repository as the project.
-
-The purpose of this element is simply to add the symlinks for
-``/lib -> /usr/lib``, ``/bin -> /usr/bin`` and ``/etc -> /usr/etc``, we
-have it depend on the ``base/sdk.bst`` element only to ensure that
-it is staged *after*, i.e. the symlinks are created after the SDK is staged.
-
-As suggested by the ``.bst`` file, the symlinks themselves are a part
-of the project and they are stored in the ``files/links`` directory.
-
-
-``elements/base.bst``
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-.. literalinclude:: ../../examples/flatpak-autotools/elements/base.bst
-   :language: yaml
-
-This is just a :mod:`stack <elements.stack>` element for convenience sake.
-
-Often times you will have a more complex base to build things on, and it
-is convenient to just use a :mod:`stack <elements.stack>` element for
-your elements to depend on without needing to know about the inner workings
-of the base system build.
-
-
-``elements/hello.bst``
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
-.. literalinclude:: ../../examples/flatpak-autotools/elements/hello.bst
-   :language: yaml
-
-Finally, we show an example of an :mod:`autotools <elements.autotools>` element
-to build our sample "Hello World" program.
-
-We use another :mod:`local <sources.local>` source to obtain the sample
-autotools project, but normally you would probably use a :mod:`git <sources.git>`
-or other source to obtain source code from another repository.
-
-
-Using the project
------------------
-Now that we've explained the basic layout of the project, here are
-just a few things you can try to do with the project.
-
-.. note::
-
- The following examples assume that you have first changed your working
-   directory to the
-   `project root <https://github.com/apache/buildstream/tree/master/doc/examples/flatpak-autotools>`_.
-
-
-Build the hello.bst element
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-To build the project, run :ref:`bst build <invoking_build>` in the
-following way:
-
-.. raw:: html
-   :file: ../sessions/flatpak-autotools-build.html
-
-
-Run the hello world program
-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-The hello world program has been built into the standard ``/usr`` prefix,
-and will automatically be in the default ``PATH`` for running things
-in a :ref:`bst shell <invoking_shell>`.
-
-To just run the program, run :ref:`bst shell <invoking_shell>` in the
-following way:
-
-.. raw:: html
-   :file: ../sessions/flatpak-autotools-shell.html
