There may be something better, but this might help ...

There is a small pamphlet that was distributed at a hackathon a year or so back, and Tim Miller wrote a section describing the essentials of ctakes and ML.  You can find the "pamphlet/manual" on the wiki page : https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CTAKES/cTAKES+4.0  in the section labeled Documentation.  "A pamphlet/manual on cTAKES basics".  The ML information starts on page 8.
