the footer is actually looking good and the graphic fits pretty well
(size and layout).

However, it's on the bottom and for such temporary and visibility-needed
things not the best location. Therefore I've created 2 test webpapges:

http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/index_asfcon.html
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/download/index_asfcon.html

Simple layout but it could be aligned more to the general page design.

What do you all think?

I don't know if we need a separator line/graphic between the colored
boxes or above on the top. The actual problem with birds is that it
seems to be created for a specific resolution. When increasing the size
(as it could be seen in your screenshot) it doesn't look good as it is
too pixelated - just open
"http://www.openoffice.org/images/campaign-divider.png" and increase the
webpage zoom in the browser.

Maybe we can use the lines between the list items on the left column?

I don't want to further delay all of your work, just wanted to play with this and show you. Look what happens if you add the divider above the event box - and push the text over to align with the text below. I just need to get it in line with the smaller birds of the right column. now the footer gets the graphic logo also from the OpenOffice domain.

Marcus' latest version looks much nicer than my earlier attempts; maybe
we can add some text like changing the first line to "ApacheCon Europe
2014 - The official Apache conference" to make it clearer for visitors,
but small fixes can be done at any time.

The "Publish" operation of the website makes the copy, indeed.

This is being discusses on the community-dev list, see
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/community-dev/201409.mbox/browser
but indeed we can use a local copy for both the banner on the home page
and the one in the footer while the issue is being solved.

I think
http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/images/*
and
http://www.openoffice.org/images/*
will be merged.

I suggest 2014-eu-234x60.png also copy to this directory or it should be
linked from there.

This bypass the predefined adblock filter.

at least in my browser it's looking good now. When nobody objects I
would bring it online - after the usual ~72h.

BTW:
The red box is just for testing - to see if this is working also here.

it looks better now. But there is still an ugly text wrap in the event
box (maybe due to 2 divs) and the hover over background inherited from
the list items below. So, still a bit to do. However, until now:

This looks pretty good actually (yes I tweaked AdBlock Plus a bit!). It
may need some additional styling like the other entries in the main left
column so it responds better to window width changes.

And...if the white space under the blue nav bars good be lessened, this
would be nice too. :)

thanks for your ideas. I've use them and produced a new demo which
should fit better into the webpage design:

Definitely yours is a better solution - and the footer looks great too now that I understand! I misunderstood the importance, thanks for correcting this because my examples DO take over the page and that is not the impact needed.

Maybe something like this, but on the right column only? I had tried
both the main text and the right column back at the time, but all I got
was similar to what Marcus got, and it is too obtrusive (and it doesn't
play well with optional elements on the home page, like the "This site
is also available in Italian" note).

So a solution could be to keep it in the footer across the site, but to
add a block with image, some text and rounded corners just above the
"Recent blog posts" on the home page). In short: I was trying to place
only the image and that didn't work, but wrapped in a div with a short
text as per your latest proposals it will probably work better.

Remember, there is also a 125x125 image at
http://www.apache.org/ads/ApacheCon/ if this can help.

Strange. Can some HTTP/HTTPS paranoid security measure get in the way?
But feel definitely free to copy the image to the main site and server
our "local" copy instead, in case this solves the problem.

That will need some rework sooner or later too. That space would be for
project announcements, while ApacheCon is a foundation-wide event that
we must surely promote, but not an announcement (I mean, this banner is
supposed to stay there until ApacheCon, 17-21 November; so it shouldn't
take over our announcements line).

   Andrea.

Thanks for your work on this.

And, I imagine my previous comments about this might not have made any
sense. :/

In FF 31.0, the ApacheConEU in the bottom left corner is not showing up
at all! So thanks for these images, or I wouldn't have known it was
there at all despite Andrea mentioning it. (yes, I do see it in the
actual code however.)

I can see it with Konqueror.

So, maybe the class specified for the image is causing this?

OK, now on to your samples.

from your renderings, I like either the footer placement or #2.

We normally use the Announcement banner -- the first blue line -- for
announcements, though this is first I can remember having a graphic as
really an integral part of the announcement. So, in this respect, I
think ApacheCon is a special case.

I am thinking that the bar across the width of the page makes it stand apart from the download buttons, but what do you think?

Visibility for CSS3 from caniuse.com:

I would need to see both versions before I could answer this I think. :/

Also, maybe see (random, I didn't look at all sites):
http://libcloud.apache.org/
http://maven.apache.org/
http://ofbiz.apache.org/

for additional placement ideas. I am liking the News column idea of
OFBiz actually.

I was playing with this a bit in Firebug - just to add to the mix. I like the 'news' of Apachecon above the fold with the thought that it could be an area for future meetings and announcements if desired. I am thinking that the bar across the width of the page makes it stand apart from the download buttons, but what do you think?

I wanted to bring the attention to the top - away from the bottom.

Sure, it would be possible to put it there. Do you still see an
advantage to have it a few pixels higher than instead of leaving it in
the footer?

Thanks

On both of these, what I see is that the notice is being partially
covered by the blue navigation areas.

Generally, I think this notice would be better on the home page than
other pages.
Any chance we could relocate this to the bottom area maybe between the
W3C button and the end of the right side navigation element?
