[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-21582) MultiStepOperations should not encode range movements using endpoints

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-21582?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=18105489#comment-18105489 ]

Marcus Eriksson commented on CASSANDRA-21582:
---------------------------------------------

Attached patch encodes the placement deltas in the multi step operations using node ids instead, and translates the node ids to endpoints when applying them. This is done since placements are still endpoint-based. Most of the complexity in the patch is due to supporting upgrades while having ongoing endpoint-encoded MSOs.

During a rolling upgrade the metadata serialization version is bumped when the last node in the cluster is upgraded. For V8 -> V9 (6.0-alpha2 -> 6.0-alpha4) upgrades this is now blocked if there are ongoing multi step operations, to make sure we don't mix endpoint-deltas and nodeid-deltas. The operator has to either let the MSO finish or abort it before upgrading the last node.

> MultiStepOperations like move, decommission etc encode range movements using endpoints. This blocks any IP changes while there is an ongoing MSO.
