I don't see 'FDT' word in your original message, so, as you suggested to
install IntelliJ IDEA at step 4, reader thinks that step 7 is about
IntelliJ IDEA configuration. But step 7 should not be done in IntelliJ IDEA.

That's a question only Adobe can answer. The answer they have given in the past is other OSs grew faster (iOS and Android in that list) and it made more financial sense to support them.

There is a Linux porting kit for AIR - no idea if we could get our hands on that.

Re: Apache Flex Running in Linux .. (;

Posted by Nicholas Kwiatkowski <ni...@spoon.as>.
Nick,

The big difference is the UI layer... There is no Flash Player
distribution any more. There is a bundled FP installation that can sit
inside Chrome, but it relies on Chrome to do its UI..

It became a big pain in the rear to continue to maintain compatibility with
all the different variants of X11 (what are there now -- 6 of them?!), plus
all the wacky things that graphic cards do. When dealing with something
like the Flash Player, you can't leverage a lot of the native UI that is
exposed to you by the WM, so you end up drawing everything by hand. Adobe
decided at one time that it wasn't worth all the debugging and testing for
such a small portion of the population. This was the same population that
was railing on Adobe for only distributing blobs instead of the source code
(something they are unwilling and unable to do due to 3rd party licenses
software).

Android is a "closed" environment. It offers one way for applications to
draw to the screen -- and generally it is the same for ALL Android based
devices. Display drivers are obfuscated from the developer, along with all
the other things that a developer would need to worry about in an
X11 environment.

Maybe this is just my ignorance of the nuances involved, but since Android
is pretty much linux under the hood, what is the difficulty for Adobe in
maintaining a linux distribution of AIR? I understand it may necessitate
limiting it's support to certain distros, but that would be better than
nothing, would it not?

this worked for me and it did not require setting up the SDK in /opt. This
was for FDT. I guess that's the beauty of Linux, flexibility

Hi,
what for is step 7?
Flex SDK should be configured at Project Structure | SDKs (not Global
Libraries) and set to the Flash build configuration at Project Structure
| Modules | [your Flash module] | [your Flash build configuration
subnode] | Dependencies tab.

Mostly likely depends if your doing AIR mobile work or not, I know people who use Linux now to develop browser and desktop apps and don't mind using the older version.

There's not much we can do about Adobe's support of Linux but being an Open Source project we should try and support Linux the best we can.

Thanks,
Justin

Re: Apache Flex Running in Linux .. (;

Justin, you have made the crucial point 'parity with the Win player and
AIR'. The issue is Adobe support or I guess the lack of it. So long as
there is a freeze on Linux support player and run-time. Its really not
properly supported. I suppose it can be supported with a caveat. I have
unfortunately had to stop doing any AS/Flex development on Linux. There
have been so many advancements to AIR and the player that to stick with
Linux did not seem to me a sensible choice.

ps:I have to grudgingly admit though that since I installed Dexpot (which
gives me my multiple 3D desktops) and Windowblinds,(to customize my
workspace), my system now looks like my LinuxMint so I'm having to admit
that Win 7 does not suck. (That's a really difficult thing to say, but its
true)

Hi,

Form a quick search:

You need one for AIR and Flash Player:
https://www.adobe.com/licensing/

And they can't be on a public facing web site :-(

And more importantly the Flex SDK.

Believe you need a distribution licence from Adobe in order to legally do so.

An alternative would be a linux install package with the SDK and scripts to complete the install process (asking to accept terms of licence and download bits). We have working scripts for Linux (see ide directory).

First step is make an connivence binary release - in doing that we may get a few Linux people on board to help out with other issues.

An option I see is to not pixel bender stuff it would still allow people to make and test patches on Linux - and that's still of some use to developers/the community.

Hmm. Not quite sure Apache sees it that way. Check out this quote from

I see releasing the source code and building it as two separate issues (and noted as such in the sub tasks). It's not an ideal situation but better than noting in my books. But if we coudl make an "offical" Linux binary distribution that would be a good first step.

IMO it should still get the correct version of AIR, pass mustella tests etc etc before we say it's officially supported.

Also, I'm not sure it will be practical in the short term to make the
official release (the source package) support Linux as the build script of
the source package requires compiling PixelBender source files and there is
no PixelBender compiler for Linux.

But I think we can say that the convenience binary packages can be used on
Linux.

Just something to note - if you take an installed windows or mac version of the SDK and copy it (which I think you are doing), while it may be configured correctly it will contain the wrong version of AIR.

While it works I'm not sure we can call it supported as yet, it's not fully tested and several other things would need to be done before Apache Flex can say it's on officially supported platform.

I raise a JIRA issue for this:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLEX-33528

I noticed the defrences now, installiing the sdk in windows automatically
adds the needed libraries that includes flash player debugger and air to
the sdk frameworks sub directory, I just tried it and it works fine in
booth FDT and IntelliJ Idea Ultimate, but it has some issues in FDT, I
will post a step by step guide later.

since it is working now, can anyone ask the site admin to declear sdk as
supports linux, along with adding download link for the sdk "the arter
install windows or mac" sdk.

Saleh

Hi,

I also updated the addAIRToSDK.sh script to work for Linux. Only version 2.6 of AIR is supported on Linux, Adobe didn't release it for Linux after that.

The Mac binary also works and may be preferable - don't recall having to opt/chown anything.

I posted instructions back in Feb.
