Lenya Installation

Hi there

First: I am really impressed how far you guys got with Lenya!

However, I have some small complains about the installation procedure as
documented on

http://lenya.apache.org/installation/source_version.html

I tried to install the last snapshot.

-----
In the section

Standalone Installation (using the built-in Jetty)

there is

         7. Configure Lenya

            cocoon.src.dir=$COCOON_HOME
            tomcat.home.dir=$TOMCAT_HOME

which is quite confusing. TOMCAT_HOME should not appear here.

-----

Then I was confused by the use of $COCOON_HOME in the installation
instructions. I even have this set as an environment variable, but it is not
checked in the build.properties. Instead of hard-wiring a specific version
(namely ../cocoon-2.1.6) it should honor $COCOON_HOME or just read
../cocoon (which could be a simlink).

-----

Expect more "complaints" from a dummy user. And keep the good work going!

Best Martin

I recommend sticking with a specific version declaration. We
consistently have problems with users using the wrong version.
Making the version explicit guards against this.

I put "cocoon-2.1.6" because this is the root directory inside the
cocoon.tar.gz. I don't know if this is the same name in the .zip version.

But if this is a problem, I can change it again. Just let me know. :-D

Already implemented a site for our Lab, and people really like it. Now I want
to get up to speed with custom doctypes for certain pages.

Well just delete the line talking about TOMCAT in the section about the Jetty
installation.

the documentation on the site is for the 1.2 branch, the snapshots are
1.4. we need to fix this.

it used to be just cocoon, but some thought naming it explicitly would
be better.

correct, and yes.

for most cases, the default is probably fine.

Yes, I did. But I built cocoon-2.1.6 before with the standard Cocoon build
settings. Apparently the Lenya build just copies everything that sits in the
Cocoon directory. Is this correct? Does one have to delete the cocoon/build/
tree before the Lenya build?

I noted something similar before: Suddenly all my Cocoon applications were in
the Lenya build directory (eating a lot of space, because there were just
simlinked into the cocoon/build/webapps directory).

If my assumptions are correct: would it make sense to do a special restricted
Cocoon build in a separate build directory, preferentially in the lenya tree?

Thoughts?

Best, Martin

I agree. One task the build system could do for us is validate the
correct version of Cocoon and that the correct build.properties file
was used.

it already compiles cocoon (in the trunk). not sure if downloading it
would make it that much easier to offset the maintenance and support
overhead of having additional ways to build lenya.

maybe one day, the precompiled cocoon blocks can be downloaded from
somewhere.. sounds like maven to me :)

i personally doubt its worth it. i think the build is now reasonably
simple and effort should be rather put into making it easier to get
started with your own publication (if we are talking about lowering the

While working on the lenya build system, I tought: "The lenya build system
can also download and compile cocoon 2.1.6 for us. This is will make
things a lot easier for newbies"

I wanted to do that, but not sure if this is desired at all. Perhpas is
posible to make it as a new Ant target. It could be called:
"newbie-install", "newbie-demo", "newbie-install-demo", "install-and-run"
or... something like that.

WDYT?

there was a discussion to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 a while ago. the
entity can probably be removed, and the one from cocoon be used to make
sure it points to a local copy.

Well, I noticed today, that Lenya cannot be build anymore because of the
web-app.dtd when one is being offline or a firewall is blocking http
requests.

Also I noticed that Lenya includes

src/webapp/WEB-INF/entities/web-app_2_3.dtd

although Cocoon also ships with this library

cocoon-2.1.5.1/build/webapp/WEB-INF/entities/web-app_2_3.dtd

Any clue why this is got checked in?

oooh, really? WTF! I used the latest nightly build

from http://svn.apache.org/snapshots/lenya/

OK, I'm downloading SVN right now. Hope that helps.

-------
What follows might be somewhat offtopic for this list (I think I should
complain on the Cocoon list and at myfaces.sf.net.)

BTW. I managed to build the above snapshot with cocoon-2.1.6. Then I tried it

lenya.sh servlet

and get a bunch of errors. One really really really strange error is that
there is a complaint (sorry, I closed the terminal, cannot post the message)
that in

lenya/build/lenya/webapp/WEB-INF/lib/myfaces-20041005m.jar

in the class WebXmlParser.class the following URL is invalid:
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_2.dtd

Going to that website, it sais the new URL is
http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_2.dtd

Editing the class file accordingly lets Lenya/Jetty get a step further.

Huh, what's that???? They actually try to fetch a file from Sun??? Hmmm.

Best, Martin

I will check this one too.
