Partial backport of OAK-3330, focused only on the {{Segment#readString}} optimization. Unfortunately OAK-3330 has 2 other commits which are nearly impossible to port, so I'm going to cherrypick the change I'm interested in, which is sufficiently decoupled to have its own dedicated issue.
