[Bug 121149] New: Frequent crashes when opening documents from earlier versions

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121149

          Priority: P3
            Bug ID: 121149
          Assignee: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
Summary: Frequent crashes when opening documents from earlier
                    versions
          Severity: major
        Issue Type: DEFECT
    Classification: Application
                OS: Windows Vista
          Reporter: joep@frensen.net
          Hardware: PC
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
         Component: open-import
           Product: word processor

The new Open Office crashes every time a document written in the previous
version is opened. It reports that the document should be repaired. If I click
OK it is repairing the document, and then restarting Open Office. Then I have
to repair it once again, and again Open Office restarts. The third restart
shows the repair window empty, but there is a button to repair the file! I
tried several ways to get rid of this box: Clicked repair, Open office restarts
and the panel is back!
Tried to close the box with the X in the right hand top corner of it: Computer
hangs! Used control-alt-delete to close open office. That worked, but the
computer ended up very slow! I had to restart it to get normal speed again!
A new try to open the document is successful.
The problem does NOT appear when opening a .doc document, I only saw it with
.odt!

This looks like
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues

Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 manage the user profile differently than
previous versions. The old user profile is automatically converted so that
users can keep their extensions and settings. In a minority of cases,
especially with highly customized profiles (many extensions or customizations)
the conversion doesn't succeed. Common symptoms are: frequent application
crashes, problems with dictionaries or thesaurus, OpenOffice starting and
crashing after a few seconds. To solve this, just reset/rename your user
profile as explained in the official OpenOffice forum.

Appears to be profile corruption issue. No response from user after pointing
them to fix from release notes.
