[~tarnfeld] does Alex's suggestion work for you, or is this JIRA still important? Maybe you can't wait for the round trip time of "launch, status update, launch" for your second task?
The shutdownExecutor API call is an interesting one, and potentially worthy of its own JIRA discussion.
