question before attempting to roll another build of struts-master

Guys, I was looking at the parent pom we have 'struts-master'

Is there a reason we don't bump that to point to org.apache:apache:6
for its parent?

http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/apache/6/apache-6.pom

I didn't compare it to version 3 (which we're pointing to now), but
figure that it might not hurt to try to get it "caught up"

Thoughts?

I too am paranoid about maven, but I am also paranoid about policy...
I mean, if there are blessed plugins and enforcer rules that we should
be inheriting, then we should try to keep up. I am tempted to do the
following to "test" the struts-master artifact -

add a hosts file entry that points people.apache.org to localhost
run through releases to see what gets copied where
delete the generated subversion tags and repeat the cycle

It's not optimal, but we keep running into roadblocks when it comes
time to release. I sort of enjoy learning the intricacies of maven, so
I don't mind tackling this stuff. But, I'm also paranoid about
breaking things, so I want to know how this works and the
ramifications of subtle changes.

The worst case scenario that I foresee is that struts-master ends up
with a version number much higher than it is currently. I also plan to
go through each pom when I'm done and make sure they are pointing to
their appropriate parents (and then sometime later in my life, like
when I feel like I know maven well enough, I will go through and start
optimizing our poms).

Anyone object?

Do we have to? If it ain't broke...but I am paranoid about maven.

No, the vote should happen here, as it does for all of our releases.
Anyone can chime in, but only PMC votes are binding.

I like that idea, I'll run a release of this one so that the next
struts2 release reflects the new committers and hopefully it doesn't
overwrite the main struts.apache.org website. Then, I'll toy around
with updating its parent pom.

Also, you mentioned before that a release of struts-master needs a PMC
vote, so does that mean the vote thread should happen on the PMC list?

The Apache parent pom lives in the Maven project and reflects ASF
policy as best as it can. There was some work done recently to
automate creation of a correct source distribution, since not all
projects were doing that. (Struts already was.)

The thing is, I don't know who "controls" that POM, and what policies,
if any, determine its content. (Perhaps Wendy knows?)

A quick diff shows license wording changes, repository URL changes,
and a boatload of new configuration information that wasn't there
before. The first two would seem good to have, but probably not
essential. The last one seems like it might take some work to absorb
and validate, but without closer examination, it's hard to tell for
sure.

Since whoever "owns" this master POM doesn't appear to be pushing out
the new versions (i.e. there's no "hey, PMCs, you need to use this new
one"), I'd be inclined to stick with what we're pointing at for this
release, but put an item on our collective to-do list to check out the
new version once our own release is done.
